XC: Conference's top runners honoured after CW championships

UBC's Gibson, Dozzi named XC Athletes of the Year

CALGARY - In addition to bringing home back-to-back team titles in both the women's and men's CW Cross Country Championships, UBC runners earned some serious hardware as well.

UBC's Kiana Gibson and Tyler Dozzi were named the Canada West Cross Country Athletes of the Year after leading their respective packs to the finish line Saturday. The runners' coach, Steve Weiler earned Coach of the Year honours on both the men's and women's side.

Meanwhile, UBC Okanagan’s Joanna Brown and Saskatchewan’s Treyton Pernitsky were recognized with Student-Athlete Community Service awards for their athletic excellence, community service, and academic success.

Rounding out the major award-winners were Victoria’s Christina Peet Williams and Regina's Jonathan Podbielski, who won the CW Rookie of the Year awards.

UBC also led the all-star selections with 11 between the four teams (first and second teams for both men and women). Canada West awards all-star selections to the top 14 finishers on both sides, with the top seven on each side earning first-team designation.
