Here’s your Saturday rundown:
POOL A
BDN vs TWU: Trinity Western completed a spotless weekend Saturday, finishing off their third straight sweep, this time against the Brandon Bobcats. The Bobcats gunned for the upset early on, taking a decent lead halfway through the first set, but it was all TWU from there on in. The country's top-ranked Spartans will be back in action next weekend in Round Two. Full game recap here.
CGY vs UFV: With their backs against the walls, the Calgary Dinos came out swinging Saturday against the hometown UFV Cascades. The Dinos (then 0-2) found themselves in a must-win situation in enemy territory. The Cascades defended their turf early, exchanging sets one and two with the Dinos. Calgary edged UFV out in the next two to earn their spot in the next round, due to a tie-breaker procedure that sees the Cascades come away empty-handed. Full game recap here.
POOL B
UBC vs ALB: In the most intense action Pool B has seen so far, the UBC Thunderbirds took down host Alberta Pandas in four sets. Both teams performed at a high rate of efficiency, making every swing and dig count. They also both locked in on the defensive ends, making this an entertaining conclusion to Pool B Round One play. The teams will both move on to Round Two. Full game recap here.
REG vs WPG: The Regina Cougars and Winnipeg Wesmen traded points back and forth for the start of this match-up, but it was the Cougars who were able to dig deep at the University of Alberta. The game held little statistical meaning, as both teams were already eliminated from the second round, but the Cougars were able to walk off the hardcourt for the final time this season with a win. Full game recap here.
POOL C
MAN vs UBCO: Don’t let the UBCO Heat start a fire. That’s the message the team sent in Round One of the CW Women’s Volleyball Playoffs. After taking down the pool’s top team Friday, UBCO carried that momentum into Saturday, earning a tough five-set match over the Manitoba Bisons. After swapping the first two sets (both 26-24), Manitoba took the edge with a surgical third set performance. It was all UBCO from there, firing back in the final two to grab their ticket to Round Two. Full game recap here.
MRU vs SSK: The end to a disappointing weekend for the Saskatchewan Huskies came at the hands of the Mount Royal Cougars, who handed the pool's top team its second loss of Round One and an early playoff exit. The Cougars meanwhile completed their perfect pool play, earning their way to the second round. MRU defeated Saskatchewan in straight sets. Full game recap here.
