WSOC: UBC, GMU players headline All-Star teams

Conference unveils all-star teams and all-rookies ahead of quarterfinal matches

CALGARY - The conference-leading UBC Thunderbirds are flying even higher as Canada West announced its all-star and all-rookie selections Thursday.

The school boasts four players on the CW First Team after the coaches submitted their votes for the season. MacEwan, Calgary, Trinity Western, Alberta and UNBC also earned first-team all-star nods.

UBC's Danielle Steer, the conference's newest record-holder with 67 regular season points, headlines the top vote-getters, along with MacEwan's Grace Mwasalla, who posted 15 goals in 14 games to lead Canada West this year.

UNBC also made waves this year with their first-ever women's first-team all-star selection, thanks to the play of Kiana Swift and a surging program in Prince George.

Overall, the Thunderbirds received seven all-star or all-rookie selections, the most of any school. MacEwan earned the next highest with six.

The all-stars release comes as the Canada West women head into their quarterfinal match-ups this weekend.

Thompson Rivers will head to Calgary to take on the top Prairie team after they won a dramatic play-in game last weekend. That action gets underway at 1 p.m. on Saturday at MRU Stadium Field. Regina will travel to take on the conference-leading UBC Thunderbirds at Thunderbird Stadium on Friday at 6:30 p.m. local time. A provincial rivalry between Calgary and Alberta will be renewed at Foote Field on Saturday at noon, while Trinity Western hosts Saskatchewan at Chase Office Field Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. local time.

All four quarter-final matches will be available exclusively on Canada West TV.
