WSOC: Leonard earns Player of the Week honours

Calgary midfielder records two points in season opener

VANCOUVER – Calgary Dinos midfielder Montana Leonard was named the Canada West Women’s Soccer Player of the Week after notching a goal and an assist in a season opening win.

Leonard’s goal to open the scoring in the 16th minute held up as Saturday’s game-winner. The fifth-year got in on the scoring again in the 82nd minute, assisting on Amy Mikuska’s goal that gave the Dinos a 3-0 advantage. Leonard applied offensive pressure all afternoon for the defending conference champions, racking up five shots on goal.

The Richmond, B.C. native didn’t miss a beat despite not playing in a conference game since the 2019 Canada West Final. Leonard finished the 2019 campaign tied for sixth in scoring with 11 points, and was named a conference First Team All-Star for the second consecutive season.

Leonard and the Dinos (1-0-0) travel to Edmonton next weekend where they will take on the Alberta Pandas (0-1-0), Saturday at 12:00 p.m. MDT and the MacEwan Griffins (1-0-0), Sunday at 12:00 p.m. MDT. Both matches will be available live on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
