WSOC: Dinos lead CW all-star selections

Conference all-stars and all-rookies released ahead of Final Four

EDMONTON – With the Canada West Women's Soccer Final Four set to open this Friday at Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C., the conference unveiled its all-stars and all-rookies Wednesday.

The all-star and all-rookie teams were selected by the conference's 16 women's soccer head coaches, who also vote on the conference's major awards, which will be released Thursday.

Highlights:

  • The conference women's soccer all-stars and all-rookies were unveiled ahead of this weekend's CW Final Four in Langley, B.C.
  • Calgary led the way with six players honoured after topping the Prairie Division during the regular season
  • The conference's major award winners will be unveiled Thursday morning

Leading the all-star charge were the Calgary Dinos, who had five players named to the conference's first all-star team. Goalkeeper Lauren Houghton, who set the CW single-season record for shutouts (11) and wins (13) this season, was joined on the first team by teammates Talia White (D), Kayla Kreutzer (D), Montana Leonard (F), and Maddison Fritze (F).

Dino Sofia Mondaca (F) was also named an all-rookie, rounding out Calgary's impressive list of honourees.

Combined, the Final Four schools had 18 players honoured as all-stars or all-rookies: Calgary (6), TWU (5), UBC (4), and Alberta (3).

The four teams will be looking to snag one of two CW berths to the national tournament Friday, as the semifinal winners will earn a berth to the U SPORTS national tournament, which is set for November 8-11 at the University of Ottawa.

UBC takes on Calgary in the first CW semi this Friday at 3 p.m. PDT, while TWU plays Alberta later that day at 6 p.m. PDT.
