WRES: CGY duo pose CW title threat after impressive weekend showing

CGY's Rowbottom, Gov earn Wrestler of the Week honours

CALGARY - Calgary's Miki Rowbottom and Gov Vincent were named the Canada West Wrestlers of the Week by the conference Tuesday.

Rowbottom battled her way to gold in the 63-kilogram category over the weekend at the Golden Bear Open in Edmonton. After receiving a bye in her first round, Rowbottom defeated Saskatchewan's Angela Aalbers via tech fall in the second.

Her round three and four victories both came by the way of tech falls as she beat opponents from Calgary and Alberta to advance to the fifth round.

There, the fifth-year wrestler showed her strength and technical skills in a decision bout, overcoming defending CW champ, Aleah Nickel of Alberta for the gold.

Rowbottom is heating up at the right time for the CW Wrestling Championships, slated for Feb. 11 at the University of Alberta.

Gov defeated Bryson Burgers of the University of Alberta in his opening round, claiming the win via tech fall.

He went on to win with falls in both his second and third rounds.

Gov sealed his victory with a round four tech fall over Jaren Bhullar of DC Wrestling.

The fourth-year will be looking for the same success at the CW Championships on Feb. 11 back at the University of Alberta.
