WHKY: Mount Royal to battle MacEwan on Hockey Day in Canada
Cougars and Griffins hit the national stage in Canmore this Saturday

Jan. 15, 2025 - A thrilling Canada West women’s hockey showdown is set to hit the national stage this Saturday as part of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada.
The Mount Royal Cougars and MacEwan University Griffins will face-off in picturesque Canmore, Alberta, the host site of this year’s Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada celebrations.
Saturday’s puck drop is set for 3:30 p.m. MT at Alex Kaleta Rink, home of the AJHL’s Canmore Eagles.
Hockey fans from coast-to-coast can stream the game for free on CanadaWest.TV.
The game will also be featured as theTelus Canada West Women's Hockey Game of the Week. Telus Optik TV customers can tune in for free on Telus Optik TV Channel 1997.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada, an annual tradition connecting hockey with communities all across the nation. The event includes a day-long marathon of live NHL coverage on Sportsnet and features some of the nation's most recognizable hockey personalities broadcasting live from Canmore.

Both teams will be eager to grab two important points with just over a month remaining in the Canada West regular season. The Cougars currently sit second in the West Division with a 13-4-2-1 record, powered by another strong season from veteran forward Aliya Jomha. The fourth-year Edmonton product is averaging over a point-per-game, and currently sits third in the conference scoring race with 10 goals and nine assists.
On the other side, expect a scrappy Griffins team (2-13-2-1) to play the Cougars tight. Despite having just two wins on the season, MacEwan has consistently been a tough out and have proven they can raise their game when facing top competition. Fifth year goaltender Brianna Sank has provided a steady presence in the Griffins' cage all season, sporting a .917 save percentage in nine games played.
Before heading to Canmore, the two teams will open their weekend set with a Thursday night battle in Edmonton.
