T&F: Versatile REG athlete, gritty VIC runner shine ahead of CW Championships

REG's Welburn, VIC's Boden earn Track and Field Athlete of the Week honours

CALGARY - Regina's Joely Welburn and Victoria's Jack Boden were named the Canada West Track and Field Athletes of the Week by the conference Tuesday.

In her third year, Welburn continues to impress by performing at a high level in multiple events. The defending U SPORTS pentathlon gold medalist competed in individual events at the University of Manitoba over the weekend. Welburn defeated athletes who specialize in single events, winning gold in the open long jump and high jump events.

Welburn jumped a height of 1.69 metres and a distance of 5.77 metres in those respective finals.

She also ran to a bronze medal in the open 60 metre hurdles.

Welburn already has a bronze, two silvers and two gold medals to her name from the CW Track and Field Championships in 2019 and 2020. She'll be looking to add to that collection on March 18 and 19 when the University of Manitoba hosts the 2022 Canada West Track and Field Championships.

Meanwhile, a long distance runner seized his moment to shine at the Jim Daly Bison Classic 2.0 in Winnipeg. Second-year athlete Jack Boden ran his way to gold in both the 1000-metre and 1500-metre events.

He posted a 2:24.78 in the shorter of the races and a 3:51.61 in the latter. That event took pure grit as he powered himself to the line in a tight race to claim his title. A photo finish had him in front of Brayden Mytopher by a mere .08 of a second.

Boden will now look to carry this weekend's success into the CW Track and Field Championships on March 18 and 19 back at the University of Manitoba.
