SWIM: Record-setting swimmers honoured

Award winners earn weekly honours

VANCOUVER - After their dominating performances in the pool over the weekend, Lethbridge's Apollo Hess and Calgary's Rebecca Smith were named the Canada West Swimmers of the Week on Wednesday.

Hess was named the Men's Swimmer of the Meet and the Men's Rookie of the Meet after winning five medals at the championship, while Calgary's Rebecca Smith's six gold medals earned the Dinos swimmer the women's award for Swimmer of the Meet at the Canada West Championships in Edmonton.

Hess won gold in record breaking fashion in both the 50m and 200m Breaststroke. The first-year who swims for his hometown Pronghorns took home silver in both the 100m Breaststroke and 4x100m Freestyle Relay, and added a bronze in the 4x100m Medley.

Smith set CW records in the 50m Butterfly, 100m Butterfly, 100m Freestyle, 200m Freestyle, and added two more golds in the 4x100m Freestyle Relay and the 4x100m Medley. The second-year from Red Deer, Alta. also helped the Dinos to their 9th title in program history and the first since 2008-09.
