SWIM: CGY, LET swimmers awarded conference's top honours

CGY's Rebecca Smith, LET's Apollo Hess named CW Swimmers of the Year

CALGARY - After astounding performances in the pool, Calgary's Rebecca Smith and Lethbridge's Apollo Hess have been named the CW Swimmers of the Year.

Hess had a historic weekend, breaking his own Canadian national short course 50-metre breaststroke record with a time of 26.63. He hit that mark twice, both in his heat and in his gold-medal performance. He wasn't done there, smashing the conference record in the 100-metre breaststroke with a time of 58.55. Hess finished the weekend with those two golds, a gold in the 200-metre breaststroke, a silver in the 400-metre medley relay and a bronze in the 400-metre freestyle relay.

Smith also had a record-breaking weekend in Lethbridge. The Olympic medalist posted the fastest time the conference has ever seen in the 50-metre freestyle with a time of 25.10. Her dominance didn't end there, as she anchored a Dinos team that captured the CW record in the 400-metre freestyle relay (3:41.36). Smith also took home gold in the 50-metre butterfly, the 100-metre freestyle, the 200-metre freestyle, and helped her team to a silver in the 800-metre freestyle relay.

Meanwhile, Eloise Allen of the UBC Thunderbirds and Calgary's Charline Skalenda scooped up the conference's Rookie of the Year awards. Allen is taking home a haul of medals from her first CW Championship (gold in the 100-metre breaststroke, silver in the 50-metre backstroke, silver in the 50-metre breaststroke, bronze in 200-metre breaststroke, gold in the 400-metre medley relay, and silver in the 400-metre freestyle relay). Skalenda had an impressive showing in the individual medleys, showing off his depth with a silver in the 200-metre individual relay and a bronze in the 200-metre individual medley.

Victoria's Olivia Roschat and Calgary's Mark McKenzie were recognized with Student-Athlete Community Service awards for their athletic excellence, community service, and academic success.

Rounding out the major award-winners were Peter Schori (Lethbridge) and Derrick Schoof (British Columbia), who were named the men's and women's CW Coaches of the Year respectively.
