SOC: Whibley, Steinhauer lead teams to quarter-final triumphs

Players of the Week help teams advance to Final Fours

VANCOUVER - Victoria's Ian Whibley and Saskatchewan's Jadyn Steinhauer were named Canada West Soccer players of the Week after lifting their teams to victories in the opening round of the conference playoffs.

Whibley scored three times and added an assist in the Vikes 6-3 quarter-final extra time win over the MacEwan Griffins on Saturday.

The fourth-year Errington, B.C. product scored the second goal of the match to put the Vikes ahead 2-0 in the 17th minute. After MacEwan got a goal back just before the break, Whibley got Victoria back on track with a goal in the 53rd minute.

After two more Griffins goals forced the game past 90 minutes, Whibley was determined to extend the Vikes season in extra time.

Whibley set up what would stand as the game-winning goal in the opening minute of extra time, before adding an insurance goal just three minutes later.

Whibley will move forward as the conference's nominee for U SPORTS Athlete of the Week.
