SOC: GMU forward, UBCO keeper stone cold in key matches

Woodroffe, Mwasalla named CW Players of the Week

CALGARY – UBCO's Ronan Woodroffe and GMU's Grace Mwasalla were named the Canada West Soccer Players of the Week by the conference on Tuesday.

Woodroffe put together a statement weekend, proving the Heat can compete with the best in the west.

Completely composed, the rookie keeper turned away the Pacific Division's top team again, again and again. After TRU got on the board in the eleventh minute, Woodroffe closed the door. His play allowed the Heat to climb back into the match to first tie then go ahead in the game's final minutes.

Woodroffe stopped eight of nine shots from the talented WolfPack as the underdog Heat took the win, 2-1.

He returned Saturday without missing a beat. The Kelowna, BC product kept Thompson Rivers off the board with six saves, giving the Heat a draw. The shutout improved his save percentage to .864 on the season, good for second in the conference.

Woodroffe and UBCO are now set to travel to Prince George to take on UNBC Saturday at noon. You can catch the game exclusively on Canada West TV.

Meanwhile, Grace Mwasalla showed she's in top form for the defending U SPORTS champions, MacEwan Griffins.

Mwasalla put her first of the weekend on the board Saturday with a well-placed kick on a brilliant feed from teammate Maya Morrell. It was then her turn to assume the role of playmaker as she set up Alyx Henderson for the Griffins' second of the match, both of which went unanswered as MacEwan defeated the Mount Royal Cougars 2-0.

With the score, Mwasalla became the first player in Griffins' history to reach double digits in goals in a Canada West season.

But she wasn't done there. The Calgary, AB product returned Sunday with a hat trick and another assist as her Griffins stomped the Lethbridge Pronghorns, 8-0.

Mwasalla now leads the conference in goals with 13 in 12 games played. She cracked the CW Top 10 list for most goals in a season and will look to further move up that list Saturday when the Griffins host Regina at noon. You can catch the game exclusively on Canada West TV.
