SOC: Fraser Valley's Zanatta, Dinos Leonard named Players of the Week

Zanatta breaks CW single-game assists record against UBC

VANCOUVER - Fraser Valley Cascades third-year midfielder Trevor Zanatta and Calgary Dinos fifth-year midfielder Montana Leonard were named Canada West Soccer Players of the Week on Tuesday.

Zanatta broke a Canada West single-game record with four assists on Sunday while leading UFV to its first win of the season.

The Coquitlam, B.C. native was busy in the midfield, assisting on the game's first goal in the opening minute. Two more assists in the first half gave the Cascades a commanding early 3-0 lead. Zanatta would add one more assist in the 56th minute of the Cascades 5-1 win over the previously undefeated UBC Thunderbirds.

The previous record for assists in a game stood at three and had been achieved 15 times, most recently in 2019.

The Cascades (1-3-2) are back in action next weekend, paying a visit to the Thompson Rivers WolfPack (3-1-4) October 8-9.

Zanatta will move forward as the CW nominee for the U SPORTS Athlete of the Week.

Leonard recorded a hat-trick for the second time this season, highlighting a 2-0 weekend for the Dinos with three goals on Sunday.

Leonard scored in the 21st, 25th and 37th minutes to push the Richmond, B.C. product's conference leading goal scoring total to 12 in Calgary's 5-0 win over Lethbridge.

The senior midfielder also scored a goal on Saturday, opening the scoring in the Dinos 3-1 win over the Pronghorns.

The Dinos, who the Canada West's Central Division with a 6-1-1 record, will enjoy a weekend off before paying a visit to Edmonton October 16-17 for a pair of games with the Alberta Pandas.

Leonard will move forward as the CW nominee for the U SPORTS Athlete of the Week.
