Student-athletes honoured after championship weekend

VANCOUVER - After handing out conference hardware over the weekend at a pair of championships this weekend, the Canada West announced weekly individual honours on Monday.

Individual cross country champions Thomas Nobbs and Joanna Brown were named the Canada West Runners of the Week after their performances at the second edition of the conference championship event in Saskatoon on Saturday.

Nobbs, a third-year from Vancouver, B.C. took the individual title in a time of 24:30 and helped the UBC Thunderbirds capture the team banner.

Meanwhile, Brown edged out teammate Lauren McNeil for the gold medal in the women's race as the UBC Okanagan Heat had racers finish first and second. The third-year runner out of Carp, Ont. won in a time of 28:43.

In Calgary, Callandra Eagleton helped the host Dinos to a bronze medal at the Canada West women's rugby championship.

Eagleton scored a pair of tries to open the bronze medal match on Sunday, lifting Calgary to a 10-0 lead over its southern Alberta rival, the Lethbridge Pronghorns. The Dinos would hold on for a 29-19 win.

In Thursday's semifinal matchup with the eventual champion UBC Thunderbirds, the third-year Foothills, Alta. product scored the opening try of the match.
