RUGBY: Player of the Week Thompson lifts Dinos to win

Late try by Thompson propels Dinos to first win

VANCOUVER - Calgary wing Taejah Thompson's late game catch gave the Dinos a hard fought victory and earned the fourth-year Canada West Rugby Player of the Week honours.

The Dinos won their season opener Saturday with a 12-6 result over the Lethbridge Pronghorns.

In a back-and-forth second half, the Dinos found themselves trailing the visiting Pronghorns 6-5 with just 10 minutes to play in the match. As the Dinos moved down the field, Thompson was able to track down a Patricia Lively kick, making a spectacular over the shoulder catch before finishing off the play for a try.

The return to Canada West competition has been a long time coming for Thompson. Thompson suffered a major knee injury just before an opportunity to represent Canada at the 2019 FISU Games. That injury kept Thompson off the field for the entire 2019 CW season. Saturday marked the Calgary native's first game back since 2018.

Game log: 1 try (70th minute) in 12-6 W vs Lethbridge

Calgary (1-0) hits the road for a Thursday matchup with the Victoria Vikes (1-1) at 5 p.m. PDT.
