RUGBY: Player of the Week, Symonds, leads UBC to victory

A pair of key tries propelled UBC to an opening day win

VANCOUVER - First-year UBC Thunderbird Florence Symonds was named Canada West Rugby Player of the Week on Tuesday after recording a pair of tries in a season opening win.

Symonds' two scores came at key times in UBC's 31-15 triumph over the Victoria Vikes on Sunday.

With the Thunderbirds trailing 10-7 late in the first half, the Vancouver native made it into the try zone to give UBC a 14-10 lead that it would not relinquish. Symonds added a second try on the day late in the game, ending any hopes of a Vikes comeback.

Game log: 2 tries in 31-15 W at Victoria

It's a short turnaround for the Thunderbirds (1-0) as they host the Alberta Pandas in Vancouver at 4:00 p.m. PT on Thursday in the team's home opener.
