RUGBY 7s: UBC tournament Dream Team announced
Host Thunderbirds land three on Dream Team
Feb. 14, 2024 - The host UBC Thunderbirds used home field to their advantage at the second stop of the Canada West Rugby 7s series last weekend, landing three players on the tournament Dream Team.
Adia Pye, Savannah Bauder and Sarah MacPherson were all recognized after leading the hosts to a dominant 5-0 record at the event, lifting the T-Birds to top spot in the aggregate standings. Both UBC and Victoria have 18 points through two tournaments, with the T-Birds holding the tie-breaker advantage on points for/against.
UBC's offence proved unstoppable all weekend, with MacPherson leading the team in scoring with six tries. Pye was a force to be reckoned with, scoring a pair of tries in a crucial 17-7 victory over rival Victoria.
Bauder was also in fine form, scoring a trio of tries throughout the weekend while helping UBC control the flow of play in each match.
Victoria's Larah Wright was also recognized with a dream team nod after leading her team to a 4-1 record, notching four tries on the opening day of competition and scoring her team's lone try against UBC on Saturday.
Danika Dool and Ava Van Santen led Trinity Western to a 3-2 record, helping the Spartans make a successful debut after travel disruptions forced them to miss the first Rugby 7s stop last month. Van Santen scored a trio of tries at the event, including a pair in a 15-10 win over Calgary, while Dool put the team on her back by scoring three tries in a 15-10 win over Lethbridge.
Lethbridge's Zina Umeh rounded out the list with an impressive showing, driving the Pronghorns offence by scoring four total tries.
UBC and Victoria now top the aggregate standings with 18 points each. Calgary sits third with eight points, Alberta fourth with seven points, TWU fifth with six points, followed by Lethbridge with four points.
The teams will travel to Trinity Western for the third Canada West Women's Rugby 7s series tournament on Feb. 23 & 24.
