RUGBY: 7s season opens Jan. 22

Victoria Vikes look to regain dominance after suspended season

EDMONTON – It’s baaaaack.

The hard-hitting, fast-paced, blink-and-you’ll-miss-something sport returns to Canada West after a season hiatus.

Rugby 7’s fell victim to COVID-19 in 2021 but is ready to roll with its pre-pandemic momentum in 2022.

Rugby’s “little sister” has been growing on a world stage since its introduction into the Olympics in 2016. Canada West’s athletes bring that fervor close to home.

The first stop in the three-tournament season is the Dome at Foote Field in Edmonton, where the University of Alberta Pandas is set to host six women’s teams on Jan. 22 and 23.

The second tournament resumes at the University of Victoria on Feb. 12 and 13 on Wallace Field, before wrapping up at UBC's Geralt McGavin/Thunderbird Stadium on Feb. 25 and 26.

Since the sport joined Canada West in 2018, the University of Victoria Vikes have claimed ownership. Their three-peat reign as champions was only stopped by a worldwide epidemic. They’ll be looking to regain their crown this year.

A complete look at the first tournament schedule and daily scores can be found here. For the first tournament, no fans will be permitted in the venue, but the event will be streamed on Canada West TV.
