RUGBY 7s: Alberta tournament Dream Team revealed

Trio of UBC Thunderbirds headline selections

Seven student-athletes have been named to the first Canada West Rugby 7s "Dream Team" of the 2025 campaign, following an exciting season debut in Edmonton last weekend.

The UBC Thunderbirds were well represented with three selections, as the trio of Adia Pye, Kiki Idowu and Tia Jordo powered the 'Birds to the top of the table with a 5-0 record at the event.

Pye was dynamite offensively, as the second year led all players in scoring with 40 points. She notched an incredible eight tries in five matches, including two first half scores in a key battle against rival Victoria on Sunday.

Her teammate Idowu was close behind with 30 total points, setting the tone with four tries on Friday, then adding two more against Alberta on Sunday.

Jordo also scored a trio of tries for UBC, including two key scores in a match against Trinity Western.

Lethbridge's Zina Umeh had a dynamic weekend, leading the way for the 'Horns with five tries and two converts. Her 29 points placed her third in overall scoring.

The Trinity Western Spartans (3-1) made history with their highest finish at a CW Rugby 7s Tournament, and Ava Van Santen was a huge reason why. With a blend of power and speed, Van Santen scored a total of five tries - including three in a 31-14 win over Calgary.

Vanessa Chiappetta was key to the Vikes performance, as the fourth year from Riguad, Que. successfully made seven converts while also adding two tries of her own.

Calgary's Bomi Lawal scored five tries to pace the Dinos offensive attack, including two tries in a hard fought game against Victoria.

Teams will now take a couple of weeks to prepare for the second tournament stop, to be hosted by Trinity Western in Langley, B.C. from Feb. 7 to 8.
