RUGBY 7s: Alberta tournament Dream Team announced

Victoria's Romeo and MacKinnon headline selections

Jan. 24, 2024 - The CW Rugby 7s series kicked off in Edmonton last weekend with two days of hard hitting action inside the dome at Foote Field. After a great weekend of competition, seven athletes have been named to the first Rugby 7s Dream Team of the season.

The Victoria Vikes made a big statement to open the series, going undefeated in four games while outscoring opponents 114 to 15. Lucie Romeo and Maggie MacKinnon were unanimous dream team selections, leading the Vikes offence throughout the weekend. Romeo scored seven tries in the four games, while MacKinnon scored three tries and added numerous converts.

UBC went 3-1 and were powered by dream team selections Sara Kaljuvee and Kiki Idowu. Kaljuvee opened the tournament with two tries against Lethbridge, while Idowu had a two-try game against Alberta.

Alberta, Calgary and Lethbridge all picked up a single win at the event and had a solo dream team selection each.

Melina Ioannides was selected from the host Alberta Pandas after a great all-around weekend on both sides of the ball, including a try against UBC.

Makayla Joseph drove the Calgary Dinos offence all weekend, highlighted by a two try performance against Lethbridge that lifted her team to a 19-12 victory.

Lethbridge's Kenya Richards was also selected after using her blazing speed to put opposing defences on their heels. She scored a key try against Alberta that started a comeback win, and also scored the Pronghorns' lone try against Victoria.
