HKY: UBC goalie, CGY forward keep teams atop Canada West
UBC's Hugens, Calgary's Patterson named CW Players of the Week

CALGARY – UBC's Elise Hugens and Calgary's Max Patterson were named the Canada West Hockey Players of the Week by the conference on Tuesday.
Hugens was stellar against the conference's second-best offence over the weekend, blanking them Friday evening to give her Thunderbirds a 2-0 victory. Hugens robbed some of the league's top scorers, quieting the Mount Royal fans in Calgary. Her 22 saves were key in a victory that created a bit of space between the top-ranked Thunderbirds and second-ranked Cougars.
Hugens came up big for her team again Saturday, facing a determined MRU squad that was firing on all cylinders. She kept out all but one shot, posting 29 saves in the team's 1-0 loss to the Cougars.
She finished the weekend with a .981 save percentage after allowing just a single goal through two tough contests.
She and the Thunderbirds will be back on the ice Friday and Saturday, when they host Regina at 7 p.m. and 3 p.m. PST respectively. You can catch the action exclusively on Canada West TV.
Game log:
Nov. 25: 1 shutout, 1.000 S%, 22 saves in 2-0 W at MRU
Nov. 26: 1 GA, .967 S%, 29 saves in 1-0 L at MRU
Meanwhile, Max Patterson showed some serious grit to turn his team's nine-game win streak into 11 against the reigning CW Champions, Alberta Golden Bears.
Patterson lit the lamp twice Friday evening, first with a deflection in front of the net after winning a first-period draw in the offensive zone. He added his second of the game after sneaking past the Bears' defender to tap home a cross-ice pass. The second-year forward also posted an assist to contribute on three of the team's four goals as they earned a 4-0 victory.
In a tighter contest Saturday, Patterson scored what would be the game-winning goal by knocking down his teammate's wrist shot and tucking it behind the Alberta goalie. The point-getting machine also had an assist on the Dinos' first goal for his second straight multi-point game.
In the two big wins, Patterson's contribution was evident as he collected five points in the team's seven goals. His efforts helped the Dinos stay atop the CW standings as they kept their impressive win streak alive.
He and the Dinos will be back in action Friday and Saturday as they travel to take on the Saskatchewan Huskies at 7 p.m. and 5 p.m. CST respectively. You can catch the games exclusively on Canada West TV.
