Pennell, Prokop named CW Players of the Week

CALGARY – Regina's Hannah Pennell and Alberta's Josh Prokop were named the Canada West Hockey Players of the Week by the conference on Tuesday.

Pennell and the Cougars came out firing in the season opener, appearing set on proving wrong the CW coaches who voted Regina last in the pre-season polls.

The defenceman first assisted on the team's second goal before unleashing a shot from the point to put Regina up three in the third period over the visiting MacEwan Griffins.

The third-year Kamsack, SK product continued her strong play Saturday, getting her team on the board late in the game. She wound up for a missile from the point, firing it past the Griffins' goaltender. Her goal cued a comeback for the Cougars, who tied it up before ultimately losing in overtime.

Pennell and the Cougars are now off for a week before travelling to Manitoba on October 14 for a 7 p.m. game. You can catch the action exclusively on Canada West TV.

Meanwhile, Josh Prokop was helping the Alberta Golden Bears make a statement on opening weekend. Prokop put up five points in two convincing wins over the second-ranked Mount Royal Cougars.

He posted his first Friday night off a feed from Matt Fonteyne, a goal that would stand as the game winner in the 6-1 victory.

The second-year forward added two assists on the night, one a beautiful cross ice feed to Josh Paterson, who found the open net.

Prokop was hungry to set the tone in Saturday's rematch, burying a rocket of a one-timer past the Cougars' goaltender early in the second period.

He would add another in the third, finishing the weekend with three goals and two assists in Alberta's two statement wins.

Prokop and the Golden Bears will be back in action Friday, when they host Calgary at 7 p.m. local time. You can catch the game exclusively on Canada West TV.
