HKY: MRU, CGY forwards central pieces in weekend wins

Jomha, Gricius named CW Players of the Week

CALGARY – Mount Royal's Aliya Jomha and Calgary's Jake Gricius were named the Canada West Hockey Players of the Week by the conference on Tuesday.

Jomha played a key role in a pair of wins on the road over the weekend to help the Cougars close out the first half of the season in style.

She contributed on every one of Mount Royal's three goals Friday at Trinity Western, putting up two assists before notching a goal of her own on a hard wrister from the circle.

The second-year forward again came up big for Mount Royal again Saturday, helping her team find the back of the net as the Cougars scrambled to even things up with the Spartans late in the third. She showed off her vision and skill as she set up teammate Athena Hauck in front of the net with a one-touch pass from the corner.

With the clock ticking down in overtime, Jomha worked the puck into the offensive zone against two defenders, passed off then went to the net to tip home an Alex Spence slapshot.

Jomha now sits second in the conference for points with 20 (seven goals, 13 assists).

She and the Cougars will be back on the ice on Jan. 6 & 7 for a home-and-home with Alberta. They'll start at home before heading to Edmonton. Both contests are slated for 7 p.m. MST on Canada West TV.

Meanwhile, Jake Gricius was set on extending the Dinos' win streak to an astounding 13 games over the weekend.

With the streak on the line in overtime Friday evening in Saskatoon, Gricius rattled a rebound off the post before staying with the play to find and bury the puck. His effort gave his team the win and maintained their lead over the threatening Alberta Golden Bears, who are snatching at the Dinos' heels in the CW standings.

Gricius added two assists in a game where every play mattered on Saturday, notching points on the Dinos' first goal to draw them even with the Huskies in the third period then adding another point on the overtime winner.

The Dinos now have 30 points and sit atop Canada West as they extend their win streak to 13 with two overtime thrillers.

They will be back on the ice on Jan. 6 & 7 for a home-and-home with MacEwan. They'll start at home before heading to Edmonton. The contests are slated for 7 p.m. and 5 p.m. MST respectively on Canada West TV.
