HKY: Dinos duo earn weekly hockey honours

Calgary's Borrow, Schoonbaert named CW Players of the Week

CALGARY – A pair of Calgary Dinos swept the weekly hockey honours, as Alli Borrow and Bradley Schoonbaert were named the Canada West Hockey Players of the Week by the conference on Tuesday.

Borrow netted a hat trick in the team's Friday evening game against the visiting Manitoba Bisons. She opened the scoring in the first, racing past a defender on the outside before beating the Bisons' goaltender with a quick wrister. She then added her second of the night to double the Dinos' lead by finding space out front and burying a pass from behind the net. The fifth-year forward got to the net again in the third, this time finding her way through a crowd to tap in a loose puck around the crease.

Her goals led the Dinos to a 4-0 victory over Manitoba. But the team found themselves down by the same margin in Saturday's rematch. Borrow helped the Dinos dig deep, pushing the offence in its pursuit to even things up. As Calgary started their comeback, Borrow led a rush into the zone, made a perfect drop pass to teammate Josie McLeod, who scored to put the Dinos within one.

The team completed the comeback in overtime, pushing them past Manitoba in the standings with the weekend sweep.

Borrow and the Dinos will be back on the ice Friday and Saturday, when they welcome the Trinity Western Spartans at 7 p.m. and 3 p.m. MST respectively. You can catch the action exclusively on Canada West TV.

Meanwhile, Schoonbaert was helping the Dinos' mens team have a weekend of its own. He posted four points in the two games, as Calgary continued its drive up the CW standings.

He notched his first of their series with Manitoba off a draw in the offensive zone, picking up the loose puck and tucking a backhand behind the Bisons' goalie. He added a helper in the third as the Dinos stomped the Bisons 8-2.

With the Bisons hungry for revenge Saturday, the Dinos found themselves in a tie game until Schoonbaert showed excellent presence, staying on his own shot to tuck the rebound away for the game-winning goal.

His efforts also played a role in keeping the Bisons at bay in the final minutes of the game, helping the Dinos improve to 9-3 on the season.

Schoonbaert and the Dinos will be back in action Friday and Saturday as they travel to take on the Trinity Western Spartans at 7:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. PST respectively. You can catch the games exclusively on Canada West TV.
