HKY: Canada West announces All-Star and All-Rookie Teams

Feb. 25, 2025 - Canada West has unveiled its 2024-25 men's and women's hockey All-Star and All-Rookie team selections.
The announcement comes after an exciting weekend of quarterfinal action across the conference, with best-of-three semifinal series set to take place this upcoming weekend.
The conference will announce its hockey major award winners on Tuesday, March 4.
WHKY | Alberta and UBC standouts headline All-Star selections
The conference's two division winners dominated the All-Star roster, with UBC and Alberta accounting for nine of the 12 total selections. The remaining three belonged to the Mount Royal Cougars.
The T-Birds sported the most first team selections with three, including defender Jaylyn Morris and forwards Grace Elliott and Chanreet Bassi.
Elliott's 42-point campaign not only led all of Canada West and U SPORTS by a wide margin, but also set a new UBC single-season program record. Bassi was named a CW All-Star for the fourth straight season after finishing second in conference scoring with 32 points. Morris had an impressive sophomore campaign after being named to the All-Rookie team last season, co-leading the conference in defencemen scoring.
Alberta goaltender Grace Glover was named to the first team after a remarkable season in which she led the nation in both GAA (0.73) and save percentage (.962), compiling a stellar 12-1-1 record and a conference-best seven shutouts.
The Mount Royal Cougars also landed a pair on the first team, with forward Aliya Jomha and defenceman Alex Spence being honoured. Jomha tallied 25 points in 24 games to lead the Cougars attack, while Spence was stellar at both ends of the rink, co-leading all conference defenders with 12 assists.
The Pandas dominated the second All-Star team with four selections, including defencemen Taylor Anker and Brooklyn Tews, as well as forwards Madison Willan and Abby Soyko.
The second team was rounded out by MRU goaltender Kaitlyn Ross and UBC forward Mackenzie Kordic.
Five teams were represented in the All-Rookie team selections, including Manitoba goaltender Paige Fischer, Regina defender Jules Stokes, Calgary forward April Klarenbach and UBC forward Vanessa Schaefer. MRU had two representatives including defenceman Breanne Comte and forward Lyvia Butz.
MHKY | Cougars, Huskies, Golden Bears headline first All-Star team
On the men's side, the first team featured two players each from the Saskatchewan Huskies, Mount Royal Cougars and Alberta Golden Bears.
MRU defenceman Clay Hanus was a no-doubt first team selection for the second straight season. Last year's Canada West Top Defenceman award winner continued to take his game to new heights, dominating at both ends of the ice while taking the conference scoring title with 43 points in 28 games.
He was joined by teammate Connor Bouchard, who also was named a first team All-Star for the second straight year. Last year's Canada West and U SPORTS Player of the Year finished the year tied for third in conference scoring with 37 points while helping the Cougars to a first place finish in the West Division.
After being named a second team All-Star last season, Saskatchewan's Chantz Petruic moved up to the first team this year after a dynamite 37 point campaign. He was joined on the first team by teammate Roddy Ross, who led all conference goaltenders with a 1.99 GAA and .928 save percentage.
A total of four Alberta Golden Bears - including three rookies - earned All-Star honours. Two Bears featured on the first team, including standout d-man Aidan de la Gorgendiere, who enjoyed a strong sophomore campaign after being named to the CW All-Rookie team last season. Forward Sean Tschigerl also landed on the first team, a rare feat for a rookie. Fellow freshmen Tyler Palmer (G) and Brett Hyland (F) were named to the second team.
Calgary's Noah King and Colson Gengenbach were named all-stars for the second straight season, both landing on the second team. UBC's Sasha Mutala was also named to the second team for the second straight season. Saskatchewan's Landon Kosior rounded out the second team roster.
The All-Rookie team was dominated by Alberta, with Palmer, Tschigerl and Hyland joined by teammate Marc Lajoie. Calgary defenceman Logen Hammett and Mount Royal forward Justin Lies rounded out the selections.
CW semifinal matchups set
The conference's playoffs now enter the best-of-three semifinal round next weekend.
On the women's side, UBC will host Manitoba while Alberta welcomes Mount Royal.
