HKY: All-Star and All-Rookie Teams Announced

Feb. 22, 2024 - Canada West has announced its 2023-24 men's and women's hockey All-Star and All-Rookie team selections, as the conference's playoffs continue with semifinal action kicking off tonight and continuing throughout the weekend.

WHKY | Four Thunderbirds headline All-Star selections

The conference leading UBC Thunderbirds were well represented on this year's women's hockey All-Star list, landing three first team members and one second team selection. The dynamic forward duo of Chanreet Bassi and Mackenzie Kordic were named to the first team after pacing the T-Birds' conference leading offence, with Kordic's 36 points leading all CW skaters and Bassi finishing tied for third with 28 points. UBC defender Rylind MacKinnon was also named to the first team after leading all defensemen in scoring with 22 points.

Calgary forward Elizabeth Lang and Mount Royal defender Emma Bergesen were also named to the first team after standout seasons. Lang finishing second in conference scoring with 30 points while Bergesen's strong two-way game, which included 22 points, was vital to the Cougars' success.

Saskatchewan's Camryn Drever was recognized as the first team goaltender after leading the nation with a .953 save percentage. She tied for the conference lead with 15 wins while sporting an incredible 1.33 GAA.

A trio of Alberta Pandas were named to the second team, including forward Natalie Kieser, defender Taylor Anker and goaltender Halle Oswald.

The conference's All-Rookie team featured a pair of Dinos in forward Kyla Mitenko and defender Brooklin Fry, as well as rookie scoring leader Jaylyn Morris of UBC after she netted an impressive 16 points in her debut season. Maria Ayre of MacEwan and Jerzey Watteyne of Mount Royal were also recognized.

MHKY | Trio of MRU Cougars featured on first team

On the men's side, a trio of Mount Royal Cougars featured on the first All-Star team after incredible individual seasons. Forward Connor Bouchard was a no-doubt selection after one of the most impressive seasons in Canada West history, one where he compiled a 24-game point streak and became the first player since 2000-01 to reach the 50 point milestone.

Bouchard was joined on the first team by teammates Clay Hanus, who led all CW defenders in scoring with 36 points, and goaltender Shane Farkas, who topped the conference in wins (18) and shutouts (4).

Calgary's Colson Gengenbach was named to the first team after a fine offensive campaign, scoring 20 goals and 35 points in 28 games. Jake Lee and Sam Huo rounded out the first team selections after helping the UBC Thunderbirds to the top regular season mark in the conference, with the duo finishing fifth and sixth in league scoring with 34 and 33 points, respectively.

The Thunderbirds also added another two players on the second team, including goaltender Cole Schwebius and forward Sasha Mutala.

Five teams were represented on the conference's All-Rookie team, including forwards Jake Poole (Calgary), Alex Thacker (Alberta) and Ty Thorpe (UBC), defenders Aidan de la Gorgendiere (Alberta) and Landon Kosior (Saskatchewan), and Trinity Western goaltender Leon Sommer.
