HKY: ALB, MRU forwards combine for eight points in weekend action

Alberta's Laumbach, Mount Royal's Yaremko named CW Players of the Week

CALGARY – Alberta's Payton Laumbach and Mount Royal's Nolan Yaremko were named the Canada West Hockey Players of the Week by the conference on Tuesday.

Laumbach earns the nod after a four-goal weekend in front of the hometown fans in Edmonton. She notched her first by picking up the puck off a defender in the Regina zone, and quickly getting it on net to surprise the Regina goaltender in Friday evening's game. Her goal was one of four from the Pandas on the evening, as they kept the Cougars off the board for the win.

The third-year forward turned the dial up Saturday, single-handedly fighting off the Cougars after they jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Laumbach scored the next three goals to put the Pandas back in the driver's seat. Her first was a quick wrister from a poor angle that she was able to put past the Cougars' goaltender.

She showed off her shooting skills again in the second, putting one home from the slot on the Pandas' powerplay. She added another later in the period to help Alberta walk away with their second win, pushing them to 7-3 on the season, good for second place in the conference.

She and the Pandas will be back in action Friday and Saturday as they travel to take on the Manitoba Bisons at 7 p.m. and 2 p.m. respectively. You can catch the action exclusively on Canada West TV.

Oct. 29: 3 goals in 5-1 W vs REG

Meanwhile, Nolan Yaremko was showing off his CW Player of the Year form from last season, posting four points on a solid weekend.

The forward notched an assist in the team’s first win over Manitoba Friday. Then with the Bisons picking up momentum in Saturday evening’s game, Yaremko appeared determined to snuff out their spark.

He blasted a wrister under the cross bar to restore the Cougars’ three-goal lead in the second period, a shot so fast many on the ice didn’t know what was going on. Then on the Manitoba powerplay, Yaremko again yanked away the Bisons’ hope, racing down shorthanded, undressing a defender, then burying the rebound from the corner.

Yaremko added another assist on the Cougars’ final goal of the game, as he helped his Cougars to the weekend sweep. They're now second in the conference behind Alberta.

Yaremko and the Cougars are now off on a bye before returning to the ice November 11 and 12 when they host Regina at 7 p.m. and 6 p.m. respectively. You can catch the games exclusively on Canada West TV.
