GOLF/XC: Top finishers earn CW weekly awards

Battle at the Bear, TWU Open crown winners

VANCOUVER - The Canada West announced its weekly award recipients on Tuesday for events taking place October 6-12.

Battle at the Bear winners Ethan Banks and Elizabeth Labbe were named Golfers of the Week after finishing atop the leaderboards at the Okanagan Golf Club.

UBC's Thomas Nobbs and UBC Okanagan's Lauren McNeil were named Cross Country Runners of the Week after both earned their second wins of the season at the Trinity Western Open.

For Banks, it was a second consecutive win via playoff at a Canada West event. The second-year Dino took the Battle at the Bear individual title after outlasting UBC's Mackenzie Bickell. Both golfers finished the 36-hole event at -6 (68-70). Banks, a native of Calgary, Alta., was fresh off of a conference individual title a week earlier at the Squamish Valley Golf Club.

Elizabeth Labbe's exceptional play led the UBC Thunderbird to a first-place result. Labbe was the only women's player to finish under-par after 36 holes at -5. The first-year from Quebec City, Que. carded a 69 (-3) and 70 (-2) over the two-day event with just one bogey in each of the two rounds.

The event concludes the Canada West event schedule for the 2021 season.

UBCO's Lauren McNeil was the winner of the women's 8-km race at the Trinity Western Open on Saturday, posting a time of 28:02.78 to cross the finish line in first place for the second straight event. The Buxton, England product won the gold medal at the Vikes invitational two weeks earlier.

UBC's Thomas Nobbs also won his second consecutive race of the season, taking top spot at the Trinity Western Open title. Knobbs finished the 8-km race in a time of 23:23.26. The third-year from Vancouver, B.C. was also the winner of the Vikes Invitational two weeks ago in Victoria.
