FB: SSK kicker repeats, pair of Bisons impress in Week Four
Manitoba's Stubbs, Hills & Saskatchewan's Solie named Players of the Week
CALGARY – A duo from Manitoba pushed their stock up the board over the weekend, helping the Bisons shine on both the offensive and defensive sides of the field. Running back Breydon Stubbs and line backer Dolan Hills have been named the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. Saskatchewan's David Solie takes home the Special Teams Player of the Week for the second straight time after another stellar performance for the Huskies.
The Bisons' running back made his presence felt early, sprinting in a 10-yard touchdown for the first major score of Saturday's match-up with the Calgary Dinos.
Stubbs went back to work in the third, finding a route through the middle from his own forty, breaking one tackle then splitting the defence before tumbling down inside the Dinos' thirty. The 39-yard rush stood as the game's longest.
The second-year Winnipeg product heard his number called 17 total times in the game. Despite the consistency with which the Bisons went to him, Stubbs averaged nearly ten yards a carry, finding a way to punch through the Dinos defence with his speed and agility, while using his strength to grab a few extra yards at the end of each play.
He helped his team to a 46-4 stomping of the Dinos to the delight of the Winnipeg fans.
Stubbs and the Bisons will be back in action Friday when they travel to Saskatchewan for a 7 p.m. kickoff. You can catch all the action on SaskTel maxTV and maxTV stream, TELUS Optik TV or Canada West TV.
Meanwhile, Dolan Hills was everywhere for the Bisons' defence, reading the Dinos' plays with ease and using his speed to disrupt them.
In the second quarter, Hills chased down Calgary QB Matteo Spoletini, frustrating the Calgary offence as they looked to make something happen before the half was out. Then he shut them down all together, going up to intercept Spoletini's pass to give the Bisons back possession. Manitoba would go on to use that possession to add another major score in the second.
Hills nearly notched his second interception of the night in the third, as he gunned through the middle to break up a Dinos' pass.
The second-year Red Deer product finished the night with 6.5 tackles, a tackle for loss (10 yards), the 10-yard sack, and an interception (13 yards lost).
The Bisons (2-2) will be back in action Friday when they travel to Saskatchewan to take on the Huskies (4-0) for a 7 p.m. kickoff. You can catch all the action on SaskTel maxTV and maxTV stream, TELUS Optik TV or Canada West TV.
Over in Edmonton, David Solie got the Saskatchewan Huskies off on the right foot with a 27-yard field goal minutes into the game. Solie matched the mark in the second with another three points.
The fifth-year kicker ramped up the challenge in the second half, securing a 44-yard kick to put the Huskies up by 18. With the game creeping out of reach for the Alberta Golden Bears, Solie notched an insurance marker in the fourth, again finding the uprights from 44 yards out.
Solie was five for six on the night, giving his team fifteen points. He also had four kick offs for 214 yards as well as five punts adding up to 192 yards.
The Huskies (4-0) will be back in action Friday when they host the Manitoba Bisons (2-2) at 7 p.m. You can catch all the action on SaskTel maxTV and maxTV stream, TELUS Optik TV or Canada West TV.
