FB: Philpot goes off in Dinos big win

Alberta's Schakel and Saskatchewan's Solie also honoured

VANCOUVER - Calgary receiver Tyson Philpot scored three times, while Alberta's Josiah Schakel's stout defence and Saskatchewan kicker David Solie's consistency earned the trio Canada West Player of the Week honours.

Philpot is the conference's Offensive Player of the Week after hauling in seven passes for 214 yards in the Dinos 54-14 win over the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday. The third-year receiver found the end zone three times in the game, giving him a conference-best seven majors on the season.

Philpot gave the Dinos an early lead with a 37-yard touchdown reception on the Dinos opening possession of the game. In the third quarter, the Delta, B.C. product scored majors on receptions of 42 and 80 yards.

In Edmonton, Golden Bears linebacker Josiah Schakel was all over the field in Alberta's 23-22 crucial win over the Regina Rams on Saturday. With the win, Alberta locked up a spot in the 2021 Hardy Cup playoffs, and Schakel received up the nod as the Canada West Defensive Player of the Week.

Schakel, who leads the conference with 45.5 tackles this season, finished the day with a game-high nine tackles. The Sherwood Park, Alta. native had three tackles for loss, including a pair of sacks. The fourth-year Golden Bear forced a pair of fumbles on the day, one of which was recovered by Alberta.

Saskatchewan kicker David Solie earned Special Teams Player of the Week honours after a perfect three-for-three day in the kicking game. The Saskatoon, Sask. product added another rushing attempt to his season total with a 24 yard scramble for a first down on a would-be punt attempt on third down.

Solie leads the conference with 44 points scored this season after adding 13 more to his total on Saturday.

It's the final week of the Canada West regular season on Saturday with playoff implications all around as the teams face off in a rematch with their Week 1 opponents.

It's a pair of Canada West Football Showcase games in the province of Saskatchewan as the Regina Rams host the Manitoba Bisons at 2:00 p.m. CST while the Huskies welcome in the Calgary Dinos, also at 2:00 p.m.

Both games can be seen on SaskTel and TELUS.

The Alberta Golden Bears visit the UBC Thunderbirds at 1:00 p.m. PDT in Vancouver.
