FB: Golden Bears pick up honours after win in Calgary

Alberta's Momoka, Giustini named Players of the Week

VANCOUVER - A pair of big performances in the battle of Alberta earned Golden Bear teammates Justice Momoka and Jonathan Giustini Canada West Player of the Week honours.

Momoka was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Week, while Giustini earned the Special Teams award after helping Alberta to a 36-30 win over Calgary.

UBC's Trey Kellogg was the other winner on Monday, earning Offensive Player of the Week honours after leading the Thunderbirds to their second straight win over the weekend.

Momoka recorded 6.5 tackles including two for loss on Saturday. The fifth-year linebacker's strip sack in the first quarter helped set up Alberta's second touchdown of the day. The Edmonton, Alta. product recorded a pass break up after blowing up a would-be Calgary screen play with a big hit.

Giustini was perfect in the kicking game for the Golden Bears. The second-year kicker hit on both field goal attempts of 36 and 32 yards, respectively, knocked through all four extra point attempts, and took advantage of the wind by scoring two more points on kickoffs resulting in rouges. In total, the Calgary, Alta. native finished the day with 12 points.

Fifth-year UBC receiver Trey Kellogg scored three touchdowns in the Thunderbirds 26-24 win over Manitoba. Kellogg caught a pair of first quarter touchdown passes to help UBC out to a 17-0 lead early. After Manitoba stormed back to take the lead, Kellogg played hero for the second week in a row, scoring his third major of the day in the final three minutes. The De Winton, Alta. native finished the day with 76 yards on five catches.

It's another busy Saturday in Week 6 of the Canada West schedule. The CW Football Showcase heads to Edmonton where the Alberta Golden Bears (2-2) will take on the Regina Rams (1-3) as the race for the CW post-season heats up. In Winnipeg, the Saskatchewan Huskies (3-1) will put their three-game winning streak on the line against the Manitoba Bisons (3-1) in a matchup of the top two teams in the standings.

Both games kick off at 1 p.m. MT and are available SaskTel, TELUS, and Canada West TV presented by Co-op.

The Calgary Dinos (1-3) host the UBC Thunderbirds (2-2) in the other matchup on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. MT with the game available exclusively on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
