Dominant wrestler grabs place in Hall of Fame

Former University of Saskatchewan Huskie newest inductee

CALGARY - The newest member of the Canada West Hall of Fame is Megan Hrynchyshyn (formerly Buydens), a University of Saskatchewan graduate and wrestling star. Hrynchyshyn is a four-time Canada West champion, owning the conference in her weight class from 2001-2006. The U of S Huskie also has a CW silver to her name.

Hrynchyshyn’s dominance extended to the national stage, where she twice earned the title most coveted by university athletes: national champion.

Just as she did at the conference championships, Hrynchyshyn never missed a podium at nationals, bringing home two silver medals and bronze to go along with her two golds.

Hrynchyshyn’s talent stood out across weight classes and across sports. She was named the Canada West Wrestler of the Year in 2005-2006, and the Huskie Athletics’ Valerie Girsberger award-winner.

Hrynchyshyn shone off the mat as well, as evidenced by the Girsberger award and the Canada West student-athlete honour.

Hrynchyshyn’s podium-hunting ways followed her onto the Canadian national team, where she captured nine medals and competed at the FISU Games, Commonwealth Games and Pan Am Championships.

ABOUT THE CANADA WEST HALL OF FAME

For the last century, organized university sport has been a central part of the student experience at institutions across Western Canada. Beginning with the University of Manitoba capturing the first Western Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union (WCIAU) men's hockey banner in 1919-20, student-athletes have been competing to reach their full potential in sport and the classroom, while enriching campus life.

To commemorate 100 years of university sport across Western Canada, the Canada West Hall of Fame was created in the spring of 2019. This year's induction class will be unveiled throughout the summer of 2022.
