June 25, 2024 – When it comes to Canada West field hockey, there's one question seemingly asked every year.

Can anyone interrupt Victoria's reign of dominance?

The Victoria Vikes have won the last five Canada West and U SPORTS national championships, a dynasty not seen since UBC claimed nine straight conference crowns between 2004 and 2012.

Victoria has put themselves in a position to tie UBC for the most Canada West championships all-time if they can extend their dynasty to a six-peat this season. The T-Birds currently hold the record for most CW championships with 25, while Victoria has 24.

If last year was any indication, it'll be another battle right down to the wire.

Last year's championship was decided during the final weekend of the regular season, with Victoria clinching the crown over UBC. The regular season standings decide the Canada West victor, meaning every game matters.

While Victoria and UBC have long battled for top spot on the CW table, don't count out an upstart University of Calgary program this season. The Dinos will be guided by new head coach Jenn Beagan and will look to take another step forward coming off a season in which they gained their first win since 2011.

The three team, seven-week battle to decide the Canada West field hockey champion begins Sept. 7 and 8 when Victoria visits Calgary.

Each team plays eight regular season games and faces each opponent four times, twice at home and twice on the road. Similar to last season, the conference title could come down to the final weekend, featuring Victoria visiting UBC on Oct. 19 and 20.

The Canada West champion will advance to this year’s U SPORTS national championships in early November. The best-of-three series will be hosted by the champions from Ontario University Athletics (OUA).
