CW three stars: TWU’s Robertson, Alberta’s Ongaro named first stars

EDMONTON – Trinity Western Spartan midfielder Jenaya Roberton and Alberta Golden Bear forward Easton Ongaro have been named the CW first stars of the week for the period ending Sept. 9.

Highlights:

  • TWU Spartan Jenaya Robertson is the CW women’s first star of the week, while Alberta Golden Bear Easton Ongaro is the CW men’s first star of the week
  • Regina’s Kyra Vibert, and Alberta’s Ali Wicklum are the other women’s stars
  • Victoria’s Matteo Ventura, and TWU’s Caleb Johnson are the other men’s stars

Robertson opened her women’s soccer season with a four-point weekend, netting a pair of goals, while adding two assists, as TWU began their 2018 CW regular season schedule with two victories.

Meanwhile, Ongaro helped the Bears improve their record to 5-0-0, as he combined for a trio of goals in Alberta’s wins over Calgary and Mount Royal.

Robertson and Ongaro now move forward as the conference nominees for the U SPORTS athletes of the week.

Game log: Friday, Sept. 7 – two goals, including game-winner in 3-1 home win vs. Victoria. / Saturday, Sept. 8 – two assists in 4-1 home win vs. UBC.

Trinity Western fourth-year captain Jenaya Robertson had two goals and two assists to lead the No. 4 Spartans to back-to-back wins this past weekend in Langley, B.C.

On Friday night against Victoria, the Delta, B.C. native scored twice, including the game-winner to defeat the Vikes 3-1. Then on Saturday night, the Business student added two assists to her point total to lead the Spartans to a 4-1 win over the No. 6 UBC Thunderbirds.

The two victories give the Spartans a 2-0-0 record to open the 2018 Canada West season.

The Spartans will now go on the road to Winnipeg this weekend to face the Winnipeg Wesmen and the Manitoba Bisons

Game log: Saturday, Sept. 8 – goal on seven shots in 1-0 home win vs. Calgary / Sunday, Sept. 9 – two goals on six shots in 3-1 home win vs. Mount Royal.

Continuing his hot start to the 2018 Canada West season, sophomore Golden Bears striker Easton Ongaro led the Bears to a sweep of their provincial foes with a three-goal weekend.

Ongaro’s three goals and 13 shots over two games vaults him into the Canada West lead in both categories, as he now has four goals and 22 shots in five conference matches. He is also tied with teammate Ajeej Sarkaria and Saskatchewan Huskie Nikolas Baikas for the conference points lead with six.

The Edmonton native scored the game-winner in the 88th minute in the Bears win over Calgary on Saturday, securing the Bears fourth consecutive victory. He was even more impressive in their win over Mount Royal the following afternoon, scoring his first goal in the seventh minute, before adding another game-winner off a free kick in the 68th minute.

Ongaro and the undefeated Golden Bears will remain at Foote Field this weekend, as they host the Victoria Vikes and Fraser Valley Cascades.

 

Women’s second star – Kyra Vibert

Game log: Saturday, Sept. 8 – assist in 2-1 home loss vs. Manitoba / Sunday, Sept. 9 two goals in 2-1 home win vs. Winnipeg.

Kyra Vibert provided all the offence the Cougars needed on Sunday, scoring both goals in the team’s tight 2-1 win over Winnipeg at the U of R Field. Vibert first finished off a beauty of a play that included touches by Sydney Langen, Jet Davies, and Brigit Sinagam, then put Regina up for good with a superb left-footed volley from 15 yards out less than 10 minutes after her first strike.

Vibert also got on the scoresheet in Saturday’s season-opening 2-1 loss to Manitoba, notching an assist when she put a nice through ball to Sinagam, which led to the team’s first goal of the year.

The Cougars (1-1-0) will now get ready for a tough two-match road trip which will see them square off with UNBC in Prince George, B.C. on Friday, before travelling to Edmonton for a Sunday tilt against MacEwan.

 

Men’s second star – Matteo Ventura

Game log: Friday, Sept. 7 – two goals on three shots in 4-3 home win vs. UBCO / Saturday, Sept. 8 – assist and three shots in 3-3 home draw with Thompson Rivers.

First-year University of Victoria Vikes forward Matteo Ventura was the standout player over the Sept. 7-8 weekend as the team beat UBC Okanagan Heat and tied Thompson Rivers.

Ventura scored two of the team’s four goals and was tied for the most shots and shots on goal. Ventura also had an assist in the 3-3 tie on Sept. 8 against the WolfPack and once again was tied for the team lead in shots and shots on goal.

Ventura’s play this past weekend was pivotal as the Vikes improve their Canada West record to 1-2-2.

Victoria returns to action this weekend with a pair of games in Edmonton – first against Alberta on Saturday, before a Sunday matchup with MacEwan.

 

Women’s third star – Ali Wicklum

Game log: Sunday, Sept. 9 – two tries and one convert in 17-10 home win vs. Lethbridge.

Scoring 12 of the Alberta Pandas’ 17 points in their season-opener, third-year Ali Wicklum paced the Pandas to a 17-10 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns Sunday.

The 2017 Canada West all-star scored a pair of tries in the first half, while also adding a convert on her second major score, to lead the Pandas to their first win of the season. It’s also the first win for the Pandas since the 2016 season, after going 0-4 in conference play a year ago.

The third-year Business student also played a crucial role in stopping the Pronghorns comeback late in the second half, adding a handful of key tackles inside their own 30-yard line. The game was also the first of two in the Ric Suggitt Cup, which honours the late coach who spent time with both rugby programs. 

Wicklum and the Pandas will head on the road for the next two weeks of the season, before returning to Foote Field on October 4th for a match against the Calgary Dinos.

 

Men’s third star – Caleb Johnson

Game log: Friday, Sept. 7 – two assists in 3-3 road draw vs. UNBC / Saturday, Sept. 8 – goal and an assist in 2-1 road win vs. UNBC.

Third-year defender Caleb Johnson had a fou-point weekend, including a game-winning goal, to lead the Trinity Western Spartans to a four-point weekend against UNBC.

On Friday night the Strathmore, Alta. business student notched two assists to lead the Spartans to a come-from-behind tie with the UNBC Timberwolves. Then on Saturday night, Johnson got points on both TWU goals in the Spartans 2-1 win. The Spartans once again had to rally from a one-goal deficit with Johnson scoring the game-winner with 20 minutes to play in the match.

The tie and win move the Spartans a 2-1-2 record to open the Canada West season.

The Spartans will now go on the road to Alberta this weekend to face the MacEwan Griffins and the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
