CW launches '24-25 hoops schedule
New season tips off Oct. 31
July 3, 2024 - Canada West basketball fans, mark your calendars! Another season of CW hoops is set to tip-off Oct. 31.
Canada West has officially released its '24-25 basketball schedule, featuring a 12 week regular season and each team playing 20 regular season games.
The Saskatchewan Huskies women's program reclaimed their throne last season, capturing their fourth conference title in five seasons. On the men's side, Victoria was successful in their pursuit of a three-peat.
This year's men's and women's schedules will follow the format changes announced by the conference last October, featuring two divisions with a 20-game slate that places an increased focus on regional rivalries.
Playoffs will revert back to a multi-site format in 2024-25. The top seven teams from the Prairie Division and the top five teams from the BC Division will advance to the postseason based on their league standing using win/loss record. All postseason games will be single elimination.
The top four seeds will host play-in round and quarterfinal matches on Feb. 21 and 22. Semifinals will take place Feb. 28/March 1, with the Canada West gold medal games set for March 7 or 8.
All roads lead to Vancouver with UBC set to host the 2025 U SPORTS men's and women's basketball championships at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre and War Memorial Gym. The women's event begins March 13, with the men's draw starting March 14. The national championship finals will be played on March 16.
WBB | Huskies look to extend run of dominance
With six conference titles in eight seasons, the Lisa Thomaidis led Saskatchewan Huskies will have their sights set on more than just Canada West glory this season. The team will be hungry to claim their first national championship since 2020 after falling just short in the national final last season, settling for a U SPORTS silver medal after dropping a hard fought final against Carleton.
The Huskies will host the Alberta Pandas in a Canada West gold medal game rematch on Nov. 15 and 16 in Saskatoon.
The Pandas, who recently won their first Canada West title in 2022-23, will also be a team to watch this season. They open their campaign at home on Nov. 8 and 9 against their provincial rivals from Calgary.
Last year's CW bronze medalists, the UFV Cascades, look to bring more hardware back to the Fraser Valley. They'll take on Victoria at home on Nov. 22 and 23 in a rematch of last year's bronze medal game.

MBB | Can new look Vikes extend dynasty?
While the Victoria Vikes enter 2024-25 as three-time defending Canada West champions, the upcoming season will also mark the start of a new era for the program.
With the departure of longtime head coach Craig Beaucamp, the spotlight will be on new bench boss Murphy Burnatowski, who was recently named the sixth head coach in the program's storied history.
Victoria opens their season on the road at Trinity Western on Nov. 1, followed by their home opener against UFV on Nov. 2.
After reaching the Canada West final two years in a row, the Winnipeg Wesmen will look to take another step forward and change the colour of their medal this season. Highly anticipated clashes with cross-city rival Manitoba will take place on Dec. 5, Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
UNBC was the cinderella story of last year's playoffs, as the #12 seed went on a historic run and eventually captured the first bronze medal in program history. The Timberwolves will host their home opener on Nov. 3 when they welcome the TRU WolfPack to Prince George.
