CW Football: Week 6 Headlines

Playoff races begin to heat up

Oct. 4, 2024 - With just three games to go in the regular season, the Canada West playoff chase remains crowded as ever.

With the Thanksgiving bye looming next week, all six teams know this weekend's games carry great importance.

Manitoba is sitting pretty with a clean 5-0 record, looking to extend their unbeaten run when they visit Saskatchewan tonight.

A three game win streak has UBC back over the .500 mark, as the T-Birds (3-2) took hold of second place with their win over Calgary last Saturday. They'll head to Alberta tonight looking to avenge an opening night defeat to the Golden Bears.

Regina, Alberta and Saskatchewan are bunched together with 2-3 records and know that now is the time to make a push.

While a three game slide has Calgary sitting at 1-4, the Dinos have been right there in every contest and while their margin for error is slim, lots can still happen over the final month.

Here's everything you need to know heading into Week 6.

UBC Thunderbirds at Alberta Golden Bears

Fri, Oct. 4 | 7 p.m. MDT at Foote Field

How to watch:

Quick Overview: Alberta got the best of UBC in Week 1, but the teams have been heading in opposite directions of late. The Thunderbirds are gathering momentum during a three game win streak, while Alberta has sputtered in dropping three of four.

Friday night's battle features the top two running backs in the country, with all eyes on UBC's Isaiah Knight and Alberta's Matthew Peterson. The duo sit one and two in the nation, with Knight averaging 133.6 RYG and Peterson close behind with 130.5.

Head-to-Head: The Golden Bears will be eager to duplicate their 42-28 victory over UBC, which came back in Week 1 in Vancouver.

The two teams have become familiar foes, with the Thunderbirds being their most common opponent for the Golden Bears over the last two years. Friday will be the rival's fifth meeting in the last 13 months and seventh meeting since the start of the 2022 season. UBC has the decided edge in the most recent meetings, having won five of seven.

Manitoba Bisons at Saskatchewan Huskies

Fri, Oct. 4 | 7 p.m. CST at Griffiths Stadium

How to watch:

Quick Overview: The perfect Bisons (5-0) take on a Huskies team that has been perfect at home so far this season, as Saskatchewan has won both of their games at the friendly confines of Griffiths Stadium.

Saskatchewan QB Anton Amundrud, who sits fifth in the nation in passing with 286.2 YPG, will face a tough test against a stingy Manitoba defence only allowing an average of 17.4 points per game. The Bisons running game has been key to their success, with the Herd averaging 212.8 yards per game on the ground. QB Jackson Tachinski has found success using his legs this season, averaging an impressive 54.6 rushing yards per game.

Head-to-Head: Manitoba pulled out a 37-24 victory back on Aug. 31 in the season opener for both teams.

Calgary Dinos at Regina Rams

Sat, Oct. 5 | 2 p.m. CST at Mosaic Stadium

How to watch:

Quick Overview: It's a pivotal game for both sides, as both Calgary and Regina look to end three game losing skids. Calgary's Nate Beauchemin continues to make a name for himself, as the fourth-year safety hauled in his nation-leading fourth interception last weekend while also blocking a field goal attempt at the end of the first half. Meanwhile, Regina linebacker Cameron Mah continues his strong play. He led Regina in tackles against the Bisons last Saturday, collecting 4 solo and 10 assisted for the game.

Head-to-Head: Saturday's game is a rematch of this year's season opener back on Aug. 30 in Calgary. The Rams took a 24-16 win in that one, jumping out to a 16-2 lead through three quarters before holding on after a late Dinos comeback effort fell short.

Regina has claimed the last four against the Dinos, marking its longest win streak in the series. In fact, Calgary has lost its last three in the Queen City and four of its last six, with the last Dinos win in Regina coming back on Aug. 31, 2018.

Calgary Preview: Rams rematch on docket for Saturday
