CW Football: Week 5 Headlines

Second half begins with three big matchups

Sept. 26, 2025 - The back half of the Canada West football season kicks off Friday night, and the playoff race is already heating up.

Saskatchewan and Regina sit tied atop the standings at 3-1, but UBC, Calgary, and Manitoba are lurking just a step behind at 2-2. With only four tickets to the postseason, every snap matters down the stretch.

Here’s everything you need to know before Week 5.

UBC Thunderbirds (2-2) at Alberta Golden Bears (0-4)

Fri, Sept. 26 | 6:30 p.m. MDT at Foote Field

How to watch:

Quick Overview: A lot has changed since these teams met in the 2023 Hardy Cup, but it's always entertaining when they link up. The T-Birds pulled out a remarkable Homecoming comeback against the Dinos last week, while Alberta stumbled in a lopsided defeat at Manitoba.

The game features two defences seeking to turn things around. UBC sits fifth in points allowed per game (29.8), ahead of only Alberta (33.3).

Look for a pair of impact receivers to leave their mark on this one. Alberta's Carter Kettyle is fourth in the conference in receiving yards per game with 82.3, followed closely by UBC's Shemar McBean who sits fifth with 78.

Alberta needs a win to keep any postseason hopes alive, while UBC knows this is one they can't afford to drop as they push for the playoffs.

Head-to-Head: The teams split the season series last year, each winning on the road. The Bears took a 42-28 win in Week 1, before UBC grabbed a 35-25 victory in Week 6.

No. 5 Saskatchewan Huskies (3-1) at Calgary Dinos (2-2)

Sat, Sept. 27 | 1 p.m. MDT at McMahon Stadium

How to watch:

Quick Overview: The two teams were on opposite ends of big comebacks last week. The Huskies will be riding high after a comeback win over Regina, while the Dinos let a late lead slip away against UBC.

Huskies receiver Daniel Wiebe continued his phenomenal season, being named the conference's BioSteel Offensive Player of the Week after another big outing that included a late go-ahead 60 yard touchdown.

The Calgary defence should offer a good test for Saskatchewan pivot Anton Amundrud and company. The Dinos limited UBC quarterbacks to just 143 yards passing with no scores last week.

Head-to-Head: The teams played two tightly contested games last season, with the Huskies prevailing in both. Saskatchewan won a 44-40 2OT thriller in Week 3, then took a 16-11 victory at McMahon in the regular season finale.

Manitoba Bisons (2-2) at No. 6 Regina Rams (3-1)

Sat, Sept. 27 | 2 p.m. CST at Mosaic Stadium

How to watch:

Quick Overview: The Rams hit the turf at Mosaic Stadium for the first time this season as fans get a juicy rematch of last year's Hardy Cup semifinal. That game saw the Rams shock the top-seeded Bisons, kickstarting their Hardy Cup run.

The Rams will look to bounce back after their first loss of the season, a narrow defeat at rival Saskatchewan. Meanwhile, the Bisons seem to have turned things around after an 0-2 start.

The matchup features the top two rushing teams in Canada West. The Herd are averaging over 209 yards per game on the ground to lead the conference, with Regina sitting second with 176.

Rams running back Marshall Erichsen has firmly entrenched himself in Player of the Year conversations, averaging a stellar 139.5 yards-per-game. Manitoba's Breydon Stubbs is second in the category with 91.8.

Head-to-Head: The Bisons took a 22-13 home win in Week 5 last season. The teams would meet again in the semifinals, with the Rams shocking the top-seeded Bisons 28-25 to kickstart their journey towards becoming BioSteel Hardy Cup champions.
