CW Football: Week 4 Headlines
Season hits halfway point with three big games
Sept. 20, 2024 - The parity across Canada West football has been on full display so far in 2024, with all six teams in the playoff picture and sporting at least one win.
Manitoba leads the conference at a perfect 3-0 and will look to break away from the pack with a victory at Calgary (1-2) this week.
UBC and Saskatchewan will do battle in a crucial homecoming clash at Thunderbird Stadium, with both teams sitting at 1-2 and coming off their first wins last week.
Meanwhile, Alberta (1-2) will look to end a two-game slide as they welcome a scrappy Regina Rams (2-1) side looking to rebound from their first loss of the year.
Here's everything you need to know heading into Week 4.
Regina Rams at Alberta Golden Bears
Fri, Sept. 20 | 7 p.m. MDT at Foote Field
How to watch:
- SaskTel maxTV and maxTV Stream: Channels 48/348
- TELUS Optik TV: Channels 997/998
- Stream live on CanadaWest.TV
Quick Overview: The No. 9 Golden Bears are eager to get back to .500 after a narrow 24-23 loss to Manitoba last weekend. It'll be a classic battle of elite offence versus elite defence. The Bears offence led by QB Eli Hetlinger is averaging 29 points-per-game, the second highest mark in Canada West. They'll be tested against a stingy Rams defence that has allowed the second-fewest points in the conference. Regina is coming off their first loss of the season, a narrow 14-12 defeat to UBC. Expect a tight contest, with both teams eyeing a win to keep pace in the standings.
Head-to-Head: The Bears and Rams have split their last six meetings, with three of the last six decided by 10 points or less. Alberta won 46-27 at home last year in their lone meeting. The teams will meet again in the final week of the regular season on Oct. 25 in Regina.

Saskatchewan Huskies at UBC Thunderbirds
Fri, Sept. 20 | 6 p.m. PDT at Thunderbird Stadium
How to watch:
- SaskTel maxTV and maxTV Stream: Channels 49/349
- TELUS Optik TV: Channels 997/998
- Stream live on CanadaWest.TV
Quick Overview: While it isn't "must-win" territory yet, both teams know a victory will be crucial to boosting their fortunes. Both Saskatchewan and UBC enter Week 4 with 1-2 records, fresh off much-needed victories. The Huskies pulled out a double-overtime thriller over Calgary that was powered by their running game, while UBC leaned on their defence to edge out Regina. The T-Birds will look for a boost from a large homecoming crowd at Thunderbird Stadium.
Head-to-Head: It's the lone meeting of the season, but we could be in for fireworks if last year's meeting was any indication. The Huskies won a Week 5 thriller 34-31 at Griffiths Stadium.

Manitoba Bisons at Calgary Dinos
Sat, Sept. 21 | 2 p.m. MDT at McMahon Stadium
How to watch:
Quick Overview: The undefeated Herd head to Calgary to take on the Dinos, who are looking to rebound from a double-overtime loss to Saskatchewan. The nationally fifth ranked Bisons survived a one-point thriller against Alberta last week and will look to extend their unbeaten run. Calgary has seen their offence improve each week and has been led by dynamic defensive and special teams units. They've already taken down one nationally ranked opponent this season, a 36-22 road win over Alberta in Week 2, and will look to capitalize on home-field advantage to end Manitoba’s unbeaten run.
Head-to-Head: The teams battled twice last season, with Manitoba winning a 34-21 contest at home in Week 5 before Calgary claimed a 35-23 bittersweet victory in Week 8. That regular-season finale proved to be a memorable one, as - despite the convincing win by the Dinos - it was the Bisons who pulled off the "Manitoba Miracle" and advanced to the postseason, scoring on the final play of the game to finish with the tie-breaking edge in head-to-head point differential.
This will be the lone meeting between the two sides this season.
