CW Football: Week 3 Headlines

Huskies and Rams look to continue perfect records on the road

Sept. 12, 2025 - The Canada West football season has already reached the quarter mark, and Week 3 brings another trio of compelling matchups.

Friday night features two tilts, including the Battle of Alberta as the Dinos visit the Golden Bears at Foote Field. Calgary is riding the momentum of a key win over Manitoba, while Alberta is still searching for its first victory.

The vibes are high in the province of Saskatchewan, with both the Huskies and Rams unbeaten at 2-0. Regina heads to the west coast for a Friday night tilt with a UBC squad eager to rebound after a humbling loss in Saskatoon.

Meanwhile, the Huskies travel east to Winnipeg for a Saturday night showdown with the winless Bisons. Manitoba will be counting on some home-field advantage to spark an offence that has sputtered to start the season.

Here’s everything you need to know before Week 3 kicks off.

Calgary Dinos (1-1) at Alberta Golden Bears (0-2)

Fri, Sept. 12 | 6:30 p.m. MDT at Foote Field

How to watch:

Quick Overview: It's always fun when these provincial rivals meet up, and plenty is on the line in this pivotal Week 3 matchup. After missing out on the playoffs last season, both teams are eager to return to the postseason dance — and a win here would be a big step toward that goal.

The Dinos gutted out a 15-14 comeback win over Manitoba last week. A big part of Calgary's success came at the hands of their defensive line, producing four sacks - with two coming from rookie Crown Otoro.

Alberta QB Eli Hetlinger was solid while throwing for 3 TDs in a losing cause at Regina last week. Stopping the run game will be a focus for the Bears, after surrendering nearly 300 yards on the ground against the Rams.

Head-to-Head: The provincial rivals met just once in 2024, with the Dinos earning a 36-22 win in Week 2. It was the first win in the Ryan Sheahan era for Calgary, with the Dinos defence producing four INTs and eight total turnovers.

No. 6 Regina Rams (2-0) at UBC Thunderbirds (1-1)

Fri, Sept. 12 | 6 p.m. PDT at Thunderbird Stadium

How to watch:

Quick Overview: After a humbling defeat to No. 5 Saskatchewan last weekend, UBC will take on another U SPORTS Top-10 opponent when they host the No. 6 Regina Rams.

The Rams offence has been rolling, putting up back-to-back 40-plus point efforts. The T'Birds will be focused on stopping the ground game, but that will be easier said than done. Regina's Marshall Erichsen and Christian Katende became the first Rams teammates to rush for at least 100 yards in the same game in last week's win over Alberta.

Through just two games, Erichsen ranks second in the nation in both rushing yards (286) and rushing touchdowns (5).

Head-to-Head: The teams clashed only once last season, with UBC earning a 14-12 win at Mosaic Stadium in Week 3.

No. 5 Saskatchewan Huskies (2-0) at Manitoba Bisons (0-2)

Sat, Sept. 13 | 5 p.m. CDT at Princess Auto Stadium

How to watch:

Quick Overview: It's a matchup between two teams off to very different starts. Saskatchewan has been firing on all cylinders, averaging 40 points and 497.5 yards per game — the third-highest mark in the nation. Meanwhile, the Bisons offence has sputtered during a winless start, averaging just 11.5 points per game.

The Huskies put the conference on notice with a 51-14 drubbing of UBC in their home opener last week. Anton Amundrud was spectacular while throwing for four majors, including two hookups with star receiver Daniel Wiebe.

Manitoba is hoping some home cooking will be the cure, as a large homecoming crowd is expected at Princess Auto Stadium for their home opener.

The key to success will likely be on the ground. Saskatchewan is averaging 166 rushing yards per game, just ahead of Manitoba's 154.5. Both teams boast All-Canadian backs capable of flipping momentum. Saskatchewan's Ryker Frank is second in Canada West with 192 rushing yards, while Manitoba's Breydon Stubbs is fourth with 131.

Head-to-Head: Saskatchewan has had Manitoba's number as of late, winning eight of the last ten meetings. The teams have split the last four contests held in Winnipeg and also split their two matchups last season. Manitoba secured a 37-24 home win in Week 1 last season, before the Huskies returned the favour with a 42-24 victory in Week 6. That proved to be the Bisons sole defeat of the 2024 regular season.
