CW BioSteel Players of the Week: Sept. 22

Sept. 22, 2026 - It was another action-packed weekend across Canada West as the September calendar hit high gear, filled with explosive performances and a few dramatic comebacks.

Week 3 in football saw the Saskatchewan Huskies dismantle Alberta 65-12, with quarterback Anton Amundrud throwing for six touchdowns in his most complete outing of the season. The Dogs were firing on all cylinders, with defensive back Lucas Scheck racking up two interceptions and a fumble recovery, while Owen Mazur had two blocked punts and two forced fumbles in the win.

Elsewhere, the UBC Thunderbirds became the first team to beat No. 4 Regina, winning 25-20 to thrill over 8,000 fans on homecoming, while Manitoba outlasted Calgary 38-36 in a double-overtime thriller.

In field hockey, the UBC Thunderbirds started their season with two commanding wins over Calgary. The T-Birds' rugby 15s squad also defeated the Dinos, with Teniola Epemolu scoring three tries in a convincing home win. In other rugby action, Lethbridge outlasted Alberta 36-22.

A trio of student-athletes had three-goal weekends in men's soccer, including Jaise Shaw (MRU), Spencer Mellett (UFV) and Luis Rangel-Kataev (Calgary). Manitoba's Bianca Cavalcanti stole the show in women's action on Sunday, scoring a hat trick within seven minutes to turn a late 2-0 deficit into a dramatic 3-2 win over Lethbridge. MacEwan's Ally Tannas and Calgary's Sofia DiGiacomo also had two goal weekends.

Football Offensive Player of the Week - Anton Amundrud (Saskatchewan Huskies)

Week 3 at ALB - 13-19, 285 passing yards, 6 TDs, 18 rushing yards in 65-12 win

Anton Amundrud put together his most complete performance of the season Friday night in Edmonton, leading the Huskies to a rout of the Alberta Golden Bears. The fifth-year pivot was an efficient 13 for 19, with nearly half of his completions going for touchdowns as he passed for six majors - the second most in a single game in Huskie history.

Amundrud continues to chase down program records this season, moving into fourth place and fifth place in career completions and passing yards respectively following his impressive performance.

Football Defensive Player of the Week - Lucas Scheck (Saskatchewan Huskies)

Week 3 at ALB - 6 total tackles, 5 solo, 2 interceptions, 58 INT return yards, 1 fumble recovery in 65-12 win

Lucas Scheck spent Friday evening making life extremely difficult for the Alberta offence, playing a part in three of the five turnovers forced by the Huskies while racking up six total tackles.

Scheck's night started with interceptions on consecutive offensive drives in the first quarter, both of which led directly to Huskie scores. The third-year defensive back then recovered one of two blocked punts in the third quarter, rounding out a remarkable individual performance.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week - Owen Mazur (Saskatchewan Huskies)

Week 3 vs ALB - 2 blocked punts, 2 forced fumbles in 65-12 win

Running back Owen Mazur had himself a night to remember on special teams Friday in Edmonton, contributing a pair of highlight-reel plays in what was a dominant performance by the Huskies.

The second-year student-athlete blocked a pair of Golden Bear punts, both of which were recovered by Saskatchewan, in the second and third quarters. The first block of the night also led directly to a Huskie score, setting the Dogs up at the Alberta four-yard line.

Women's Rugby 15s - Teniola Epemolu (UBC Thunderbirds)

Sept. 19 - 3 tries in a 41-0 win vs CGY

Teniola Epemolu scored UBC's third try of the first half to get the 'Birds out to a 19-0 lead and proceeded to add two more in the second half, leading the blue and gold to a dominant 41-0 home-opening win over the Calgary Dinos. The first-year Wing from Ontario was a force, and now leads the team with four tries through two games.

Now at 1-1 on the season, the T-Birds are off from Canada West action until the first week of October when they play a pair of games in Alberta against both the Pronghorns and Pandas.

Women's Field Hockey - Sukhman Hundal (UBC Thunderbirds)

Sept. 19 - 1 G in a 4-1 UBC win at CGY

Sept. 20 - 1 G in a 2-0 UBC win at CGY

Sukhman Hundal scored in both games of UBC's season-opening sweep over the Calgary Dinos. The second-year from Surrey, B.C. restored the T-Birds' three-goal lead on a penalty corner in the 51st minute Saturday and opened the scoring in Sunday's rematch, once again off a penalty corner in the 26th minute.

Now tied for the early season lead in both goals and points, Hundal leads the T-Birds into a big test in Victoria this weekend against the defending champion Vikes.

Women's Soccer - Bianca Cavalcanti (Manitoba Bisons)

Sept. 19 - 2 SOG, 90 mins in 2-1 loss at LET

Sept. 20 - 3 goals, 7 SOG, 90 mins in 3-2 win at LET

Despite being held scoreless in the first game, the fourth-year Bisons forward managed to average a goal every hour on the weekend, highlighted by a jaw dropping hat trick on Sunday that turned a looming defeat into three big points for the Herd.

Trailing 2-0 in the 81st minute, Cavalcanti would pick up the first of what would become a hat trick in the next 7 minutes to turn a two-goal deficit into the Bisons' first win of the season. The outburst is the first Bisons' hat trick since Cavalcanti's first four years ago in a match at Winnipeg, the first in the conference this season, and moves Cavalcanti into a tie for most goals in the Prairie Division.

Men's Soccer - Luis Rangel-Kataev (Calgary Dinos) ​

Sept. 19 - 76 minutes, 2 goals, 3 shots on goal in 3-0 win vs SSK

Sept. 20 - 73 minutes, 1 goal, 1 shot on goal in 2-0 win vs ALB

Forward Luis Rangel-Kataev was in fine form this weekend, netting three goals across two Calgary wins as the Dinos improved to 5-2.

The first-year led the way on Saturday with a two-goal performance in a 3-0 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies, before opening the scoring again on Sunday in a 2-0 victory over Alberta to push his season total to four goals.
