CW BioSteel Players of the Week: Sept. 2

Soccer, football and rugby standouts honoured

Aug. 26, 2025 - The Canada West calendar is steadily moving into full gear, with football and rugby 15s joining soccer on the slate this past weekend.

Week 1 of Canada West football delivered plenty of intrigue, as Saskatchewan, UBC, and Regina all opened their seasons with victories. Friday night’s clash between Calgary and Regina became an early game-of-the-year contender, featuring a game-tying kickoff rouge (!) and Regina's Marshall Erichsen setting a school-record with four rushing touchdowns.

Victoria toppled reigning champion UBC in rugby action, while Alberta’s Kaitlin Tetteh-Wayoe stole the spotlight with four tries in a win over Calgary. On the soccer pitch, Calgary’s Brooke Batty filled the net with six goals in two games—including four on Saturday against Regina—becoming the second Dino in as many weeks to reach that mark. In men’s play, Victoria’s Fin Tugwell came up big on Saturday night, notching a second-half brace to help the Vikes complete a comeback win against Thompson Rivers.

Here are your BioSteel Players of the Week.

Women's Soccer - Brooke Batty (Calgary Dinos)

Aug. 30 at Regina: 4 goals, 1 assist, 5 points, 4 shots, 59 minutes in 6-0 win

Aug. 31 at Saskatchewan: 2 goals (1 game winner), 2 points, 2 shots, 85 minutes in 2-0 win

It was an incredible start to the season for Calgary's Brooke Batty. The second-year forward set up the first goal of the season for the Dinos before erupting for four goals of her own - tying the program record for most goals in one game despite playing only 59 minutes in a 6-0 opening win over the Cougars.

One day later, Batty showed that performance was no fluke as she scored both goals in Calgary's 2-0 win over Saskatchewan for the six-point weekend for the Dinos. Incredibly, Batty scored the six goals on just six shots. The six goals and seven points not only lead Canada West through the opening weekend, but are the national leaders by a noticeable margin in the early going.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week - Vince Triumbari (Calgary Dinos)

Aug. 29 vs Regina - 2-2 FG, 3-3 PAT, 1 rouge

It was a strong start to season for fifth-year kicker Vince Triumbari. The Stoney Creek, Ont., native was a perfect 2-for-2 on field goals, connected from 21 and 34 yards. He added three singles following touchdowns but he saved his best for last. With the game on the line and the Dinos trailing by one with just six seconds remaining in regulation, Calgary turned to Triumbari's powerful leg. The kicker responded with a booming kick that caromed through the endzone for another single to send the game to overtime.

In all, Triumbari scored 10 points in Friday's opener.
