CW BioSteel Players of the Week: Nov. 18

Top performers recognized across Canada West

Nov. 18, 2025 - With a national football semifinal, overtime thrillers on the ice and a full slate of court sport matchups, there were plenty of storylines to follow across Canada West last weekend.

On the gridiron, the combination of smothering defence and explosive special teams powered the Saskatchewan Huskies to an impressive 22-11 win over the OUA champion Queen's Gaels in the 2025 Mitchell Bowl. Canada West Player of the Year Daniel Wiebe set the tone early with a 41-yard touchdown reception, and Daniel Kubongo electrified the home crowd with an 85-yard punt return for a touchdown. The Gaels threatened to rally in the second half, but a pair of Lukas Scott field goals helped secure the victory.

The result sends Saskatchewan and its passionate fanbase south to Regina next Saturday, where the Huskies will clash with the Montreal Carabins in the Vanier Cup.

In women's volleyball, nationally ranked rivals UBC and Trinity Western delivered another hard-fought battle in Langley, with the T-Birds handing the Spartans their first loss of the season. On the men's side, UBCO continued its hot streak by sweeping Fraser Valley to improve to 7-1, the best start in program history.

The Thompson Rivers WolfPack remain the headline story in men's basketball, as sharp shooting rookie Cason Scott led the team to a weekend sweep of Trinity Western, keeping their flawless 7-0 record intact. Seven teams recorded weekend sweeps in women's action, including Regina earning two wins in Victoria and Alberta securing a pair of wins over Brandon. Manitoba and Lethbridge were the lone teams to split their series.

The weekend also had plenty of great moments on the ice. Sydney Mercier's overtime heroics helped the Calgary Dinos to a weekend sweep of nationally ranked Trinity Western. Meanwhile, UBC's Grace Elliot made program history by scoring her 62nd career goal on Friday night against MacEwan, becoming the program's all-time leader goal scorer.

In men's hockey action, Regina and Mount Royal split the "Battle of the Cougars," while Calgary swept Trinity Western in convincing fashion. MacEwan opened the weekend with a dramatic 5-4 OT victory over UBC, before the Thunderbirds responded with a big win the next day to earn a split.

Let's get to our BioSteel Players of the Week.

Football: Mitchell Bowl Offensive Player of the Game - Daniel Kubongo (Saskatchewan Huskies)

Nov. 15 vs Queen's: 7 Returns, 177 Yards, 85-Yard Return TD

Third-year returner Daniel Kubongo was the x factor for the Huskies in their 2025 Mitchell Bowl win. The former Western Mustang recorded 177 yards on seven punt returns with none bigger than his 85-yard, second-quarter house call to give the Dogs a 14-1 lead.

The touchdown was not only Kubongo's first as a Huskie, but his first career trip to the end zone. He was named the Offensive Player of the Game for his work in helping to punch the team's ticket to the 60th Vanier Cup.

Football: Mitchell Bowl Defensive Player of the Game - Seth Hundeby (Saskatchewan Huskies)

Nov. 15 vs Queen's: 5 Total Tackles, 4 Solo, 2.0 Sacks, 1 Forced Fumble

On his way to being named the 2025 Mitchell Bowl Defensive Player of the Game, fifth-year linebacker Seth Hundeby once again led the Huskies in an outstanding defensive outing. Finishing fourth in tackles, the future Saskatchewan Roughrider provided pressure all game long, breaking through on a few occasions and recording 2.0 sacks.

On one of those plays, he recorded a strip-sack of Queen's quarterback Alex Vreeken for the game's first turnover. In a contest that saw the Huskie defence hold the visiting Gaels to just one point in the first half and 11 total points, Hundeby was undoubtedly one of the best players on the field.

Women's Hockey - Sydney Mercier (Calgary Dinos)

Nov. 14 vs TWU: 2 goals, 1 assist, 3 points, 4 shots in 3-2 OT win

Nov. 15 vs TWU: 1 goal, 1 point, 2 shots in 2-0 win

It was a huge four-point weekend for Sydney Mercier. The Calgary Dinos fourth-year forward came up big in the biggest moments in helping lead the Dinos to a weekend sweep of No. 9 Trinity Western.

Mercier started things off by having a hand in all three goals of a 3-2 overtime win on Friday. The Saskatoon product helped set up the opening score of the game before netting a pair of her own, including the OT winner.

She followed that up with a late goal in a 2-0 shutout of the ninth-ranked Spartans to finish off the weekend sweep and help Calgary improve to 9-3-2 at the midway point of the year.

Men's Hockey - Kadyn Chabot (MacEwan Griffins)

Nov. 14 vs UBC: 3 goals, 1 assist, +3, 4 shots in 5-4 overtime win

Nov. 15 vs UBC: 3 shots, even in 6-1 loss

Becoming the third MacEwan player to record a hat trick in a Canada West game and tying a program single-game record with four points, Chabot led the Griffins to a massive win on Friday as they ended U SPORTS No. 3 UBC's nine-game winning streak.

Chabot was on the ice for all five of the Griffins' goals but didn't draw a point on Logan Dowhaniuk's overtime winner, even though he likely played a factor in it as he criss-crossed with his teammate in the offensive zone and drew pressure away from him, allowing an open shot.

Chabot has now moved into a share of the Canada West goal scoring lead with nine. He also has 16 points, which is tied for fourth in the conference.

Fifth-year outside hitter Emmett Graham was a man on a mission this past weekend at the Physical Activity Complex, making it back-to-back BioSteel Player of the Week nods. The veteran led the Huskies back to .500 with a pair of wins over the Winnipeg Wesmen, recording a total of 52.5 points across the two matches.

Even more impressive was Graham recording a weekend hitting percentage of .513% while recording a high volume with 90 attacks. The two-game stretch not only saw the Saskatoon product set a single-game career high, but it was also the most productive single weekend of his career.

Women's Basketball - Unity Obasuyi (MacEwan Griffins)

Nov. 14 at MRU: 30 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, 34 minutes played in 78-70 loss

Nov. 15 at MRU: 22 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals, 33 minutes played in 61-56 loss

Even though she was double teamed, bumped and jostled as the Mount Royal Cougars did everything they could to try and slow down MacEwan's top offensive threat, Obasuyi still exploded for 52 points and 21 rebounds in a two-game weekend road series in Calgary.

It's the first two double-doubles of her Canada West career, while the 30-point effort is the second highest she's had in three seasons and tied for the sixth-most by a Griffin in a Canada West match.

For the season, Obasuyi is second in the conference in points per game (19.5).

Earning his first-ever start for TRU on Saturday, Scott followed that up with a program rookie record 28 points while also grabbing eight rebounds in the 'Pack's 81-66 triumph.
