CW BioSteel Players of the Week: Feb. 24

Top performers recognized across Canada West

Feb. 24, 2026 - If you like chaos, comebacks, and conference records getting shattered, this weekend across Canada West was for you.

Fans were treated to an unforgettable weekend of playoff and championship action, with a major upset in women's basketball, an epic overtime comeback in men's basketball, and plenty of conference records falling at the conference's 2026 Track and Field Championships.

Here are some of the top storylines from around the conference:

  • The Calgary Dinos women's basketball team authored perhaps the biggest upset of the season, knocking off the Saskatchewan Huskies 61-58 with a spectacular road effort in the semifinals. Ironically, the Dinos were the last team to issue Saskatchewan a defeat exactly 52 games ago at the start of the 2024-25 season. Calgary advances to play UBC in the CW Final next weekend, after the Thunderbirds narrowly downed Regina in another excellent semifinal contest last Friday.
  • The men's basketball semis also delivered drama, with UBC overcoming a 16-point deficit to stun Winnipeg in overtime. Victoria bounced Alberta in the other semi, setting up a CW Final between two west coast foes on Friday night on the island.
  • Excellence was on display at the 2026 Canada West Track and Field Championships hosted by Saskatchewan last weekend, with a total of seven conference records falling. When the dust settled, the Huskies women's program captured their eighth straight title, while Alberta's men won their first championship since 2018. Recaps of the event are available here.
  • Lower-ranked seeds won three of the four hockey quarter-finals last weekend. In women's action, Manitoba outlasted Alberta in three games while Trinity Western smothered Calgary in a two game sweep. Over on the men's side, Calgary's special teams helped them sweep MacEwan, while Saskatchewan was the lone home side to advance after a two-game disposal of Alberta.
  • The volleyball quarter-final picture is now set after last weekend's play-in round. Three of those play-in series went the distance. In women's action, Winnipeg and UFV each won in three games. On the men's side, Calgary defeated rival Mount Royal in three games, while Saskatchewan was the lone team to advance in a sweep.
  • Lastly, a shoutout to the Calgary Dinos men's curling team, who captured the U SPORTS national championship after a tense 7-6 win over Carleton last Saturday in Regina. The Alberta Pandas also landed on the podium, finishing third in the women's competition.

Let's get to our BioSteel Players of the Week.

Oss finished with 11 points and tied for a game-high 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the postseason and her seventh of the year. As part of a suffocating defensive performance by the Dinos team, Oss also helped frustrate the Huskies all night long. She added two steals to go with two highlight-reel blocks, as the Dinos became the first team to defeat the top-ranked Huskies in 2025-26.
