CW BioSteel Players of the Week: Aug. 26

Lufo and Antoniuk fill the net on opening weekend

Aug. 26, 2025 - A new season of Canada West athletics is officially underway, with soccer leading the charge on opening weekend. The first matches of the year saw plenty of highlight-reel goals and big moments, but two student-athletes in particular made their mark while filling the scoresheet.

It's time to meet this season’s first BioSteel Players of the Week.

Women's Soccer - Esi Lufo (Thompson Rivers WolfPack)

Aug. 22: 2 goals, 1 assist, 5 Shots on Goal in 5-0 win over UNBC

Aug. 24: 1 goal, 1 GWG, 3 Shots on Goal in 1-0 win over UNBC

For the first time in program history the TRU WolfPack women's soccer team have started their season with back-to-back wins and forward Esi Lufo led the way.

The third-year from Tirane, Albania started her 2025 season with a bang, scoring a pair of goals and recording an assist as the WolfPack romped to a 5-0 victory over the UNBC Timberwolves. Lufo kept up that clutch form with the lone goal, and game winner, in TRU's 1-0 victory over UNBC on Saturday.

In just one weekend of play Lufo has already surpassed her goal total from last season and appears poised to vault up the program record books.

Men's Soccer - Owen Antoniuk (Calgary Dinos)

Aug. 23 vs. GMU: 4 Goals, 4 Shots on Goal, 1 Game-Winning Goal

Aug. 24 vs. ALB: 1 Goal, 3 Shots on Goal

Owen Antoniuk supplied all the offence for the University of Calgary Dinos men’s soccer team on opening weekend.

The forward scored four times in a 4-1 win over the MacEwan Griffins on Saturday, becoming just the fourth player since 2006 to hit that mark in a Canada West match. He added a second-half equalizer in Sunday’s 2-1 loss to the Alberta Golden Bears.

With five goals on the young season, he's already well on his way to matching last season's output of eight goals in 14 GP.
