CW Announces Players of the Week

Nine student-athletes recognized

Sept. 10, 2024 - Just like that, the Canada West calendar hit full swing last weekend.

An exciting Week 2 in football saw Manitoba and Regina continue their undefeated starts, while women's soccer had all 16 teams hitting the field. Field Hockey had its opening weekend with Victoria defeating Calgary twice, and golfers hit the links at the University of Alberta Invitational in Spruce Grove.

Here are your Canada West Players of the Week.


Football Offensive Player of the Week - Noah Pelletier (Regina Rams)

Sept. 6 vs SSK: 26-31, 359 yards, 3 TD, 1 rushing TD

Pelletier was simply spectacular as he stepped into the starters role and delivered a 33-28 win over provincial rival Saskatchewan. ​

The third year Regina product threw for a dazzling 359 yards and 3 TD, showing off his arm with impressive 43 and 45 yard touchdown strikes. Pelletier finished with video game numbers in the win, completing 26 of his 31 passes to set a U of R single-game record with an 83.9% completion percentage. The previous record was 78.8%, which Noah Picton set in a game against Saskatchewan back on Oct. 30, 2015 at the old Mosaic Stadium.

Looking ahead to Week 3: Pelletier and the Rams (2-0) will look to keep their hot start going at home next Saturday against a UBC (0-2) side that will be desperate for a victory. Fans can watch the game on SaskTel maxTV and maxTV Stream or stream live on Canada West TV.

Football Defensive Player of the Week - Nate Beauchemin (Calgary Dinos) ​

Sept. 6 vs ALB: 6 solo tackles, 2 INT for 148 yards (both for TDs)

The fourth year defensive back from Kelowna, B.C. had a game to remember on Friday, highlighted by not one, but two impressive pick-sixes.

Beauchemin's first interception return for a touchdown marked a key turning point. With Alberta leading 9-0 late in the first quarter, Beauchemin picked off Bears QB Eli Hetlinger and returned it 73 yards to kickstart the Dinos comeback.

He then added a 75 yard reception in the second quarter to give the Dinos a 24-12 edge, leading to an eventual 36-22 win.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week - Vince Triumbari (Calgary Dinos)

Sept. 6 vs ALB: 5/5 FG, 15 pts

The fourth year kicker from Stoney Creek, Ont. executed to perfection against the Golden Bears, drilling all five of his field goal attempts in a 36-22 Dinos win.

Triumbari was perfect from a range of distances, including drilling a long of 41 yards. He also added field goals from 18, 25, 26 and 31 yards out.

Women's Rugby 15s - Maya Addai (Victoria Vikes)

Sept. 7 vs UBC: 3 trys, 15 points

An offensive explosion from the fifth year wing from Ottawa, Ont. powered Victoria to an impressive 22-17 win over UBC. Addai set the tone early by scoring a first-half hat trick of tries, leading the Vikes to their first 15s victory over UBC since 2019.

The win also marked the Vikes' first season-opening win since 2019.

The Vikes are back at home this Thursday as they welcome the Lethbridge Pronghorns, who also won their opening game of the season last Saturday. Fans can stream the game live on Canada West TV.

Women's Field Hockey - Chloe Langkammer (Victoria Vikes)

Sept. 7 vs CGY: 2 goals, GWG

Sept. 8 vs CGY: 1 goal

Langkammer led Victoria's offence during an opening weekend sweep of Calgary, scoring three goals across two matches. The fourth year forward from Duncan, B.C. potted two goals in a 6-0 win on Saturday, then added another tally in an identical 6-0 win the following day.

Victoria will enjoy a bye week before returning to action at home on Sept. 21 and 22 when they welcome UBC.

Women's Soccer - Bailey Doerksen (UBC Thunderbirds)

Sept 6 vs VIC: 2 Goals, GWG, 3 SOG, 4 Shots

Sept 8 vs MRU: 2 Goals, 2 SOG, 2 Shots

Doerksen's four-goal weekend was crucial in UBC's back-to-back victories to open the season. Her brace helped lead dominant performances, while also doubling her goal total from last season.

She scored two goals against the Vikes on Friday, including the game winner to silence a raucous crowd at Victoria's Thunderfest. She continued her offensive touch against MRU on Sunday. With the game scoreless at half, she helped the T-Birds break through the Cougars defence with back-to-back goals in the 71st and 75th minutes.

The T-Birds look to keep the momentum rolling with two home games against Okanagan rivals this weekend, facing UBCO on Friday and TRU on Sunday. Stream the games live on Canada West TV.

Men's Soccer - Henri Godbout (UBC Thunderbirds)

Sept 6 vs TWU: 1 Assist, 2 SOG, 3 Shots

Sept. 7 vs UFV: 2 Goals (GWG), 3 SOG, 4 Shots

Godbout had a breakout weekend, scoring twice, including the game-winner, and assisting in another match.

His key assist on Oliver Herbert's goal ensured a hard earned point for the T-Birds in a 1-1 draw with rival Trinity Western on Friday. On Sunday, he scored two goals early in the second half against UFV to seal an impressive T-Birds win, while also giving him the team lead in goals and assists.

The Thunderbirds continue their homestand this weekend, welcoming Lethbridge on Friday and Alberta on Saturday. Fans can stream the games live on Canada West TV.

Women's Golf - Kalee Seto (Alberta Pandas)

U of A Invitational First round: +6, 78

U of A Invitational Final Round: +8, 80

The second year Edmonton product captured her second career university win, claiming the women's draw by a margin of 13 strokes while also leading the Pandas to a team victory at the UofA Invitational.

She shot an opening round 78 on Sunday, followed by a final round 80 to finish +14.

Men's Golf - Ethan Howes (Alberta Golden Bears)

U of A Invitational First round: -7, 65

U of A Invitational Final Round: -2, 70

Howes claimed the UofA Invitational title, leading by 11 shots and showing his prowess with six birdies and two eagles in the first round.

The third year Fort Saskatchewan, Alta. product finished -9 and helped Alberta to the team title.
