CW Announces Players of the Week
Nine student-athletes recognized across CW
Oct. 8, 2024 - Excitement continues to build as the Canada West calendar nears the Thanksgiving break.
The puck dropped on a new hockey season last weekend, while Saskatchewan, Calgary and UBC all grabbed big Week 6 wins in football. The race for playoff positioning continues in soccer, with just two weekends remaining in the regular season. In Rugby, UBC grabbed hold of first place with a hard fought win over Victoria, while Lethbridge defeated Alberta to claim this year's Suggitt Cup.
Here are your Canada West Players of the Week.
Football Offensive Player of the Week - Garrett Rooker (UBC Thunderbirds)

Oct. 4 vs ALB: 370 YDS, 18-for-27 passing, 1 TD, 1 INT in a 35-25 UBC win at ALB
Throwing for over 350 yards for the second time this season, Rooker was efficient with the ball Friday night in Edmonton, amassing 370 yards on just 18 passes including a touchdown toss to Mark Webb, leading the Thunderbirds to a fourth straight win to remain a perfect 3-0 on the road in 2024.
Rooker leads the Canada West with 1771 yards passing and has now moved into the top 20 all-time with 6,993 yards in his four-year career.

Football Defensive Player of the Week - Deakon Taylor-Young (Calgary Dinos)

Oct. 5 at REG: 8 Solo tackles, 2 assisted tackles, 9 total tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss.
Taylor-Young led all players with nine total tackles, including eight solo tackles in a crucial win over Regina.
The fourth year defensive back from Vancouver was key to a strong effort from the Dinos defence, limiting the host Rams to just a single point in the second half en route to a 23-20 win.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week - Vince Triumbari (Calgary Dinos)

Oct. 5 at REG: 2/2 FG, hit eventual game winning FG with 1:03 remaining
Facing vicious winds inside Mosaic Stadium, Vince Triumbari kicked the game-winning field goal with just 1:03 left on the clock to lead the Calgary Dinos to a big 23-20 road win over Regina.
Triumbari was perfect on the day, hitting a 22 YD field goal in the second quarter before the game winner in the fourth, a tricky 29 YD yarder amidst blowing winds.

Women's Rugby 15s - Savannah Bauder (UBC Thunderbirds)

Oct. 5 vs VIC: 2 tries, 1 convert in a 17-8 UBC win vs UVIC
Savannah Bauder led the way on offence for UBC in a tightly fought battle for first place in the regular season standings, scoring two tries in the second half and converting one of them to boot. The fifth-year from North Vancouver gave UBC a 10-3 advantage early in the second half and later provided some breathing room in the 75th minute as the T-Birds won their fourth straight match while earning the season series victory over the Vikes on point differential.
Bauder finished the regular season second in conference scoring with 39 points. UBC heads into the Canada West Final Four next week looking for a fifth straight title.

Women's Field Hockey - Chloe Langkammer (Victoria Vikes)

Oct. 5 vs CGY: 2 goals
Oct. 6 vs CGY: 1 goal (GWG)
Though the Vikes had 10 different goal-scorers in two games against the Dinos, Chloe Langkammer recorded a team-high three goals for the Vikes, including Sunday's game-winner in the first minute of action.
Langkammer now leads the Vikes and ranks second in Canada West with six goals on the season.

Women's Soccer - Jade Taylor-Ryan (UBC Thunderbirds)

Oct. 4 vs MRU: 2 G, 6 Shots, 5 SOG, 45 mins in a 3-0 UBC win
Oct. 6 vs VIC: 1 G, GWG, 1 A, 2 Shots, 1 SOG, 82 mins in a 3-1 UBC win
Jade Taylor-Ryan was an unstoppable force in UBC's two weekend home victories over Mount Royal and Victoria, helping the Thunderbirds clinch first place in the Pacific Division.
Friday night against the Cougars, the fourth-year from Ottawa scored twice and put a whopping five shots on target in just 45 minutes of playing time. Sunday afternoon vs the Vikes, Taylor-Ryan set-up Nisa Reehal's game opening score in the 24th minute. Early in the second half, she scored what stood up as the game winner.
Taylor-Ryan now leads the Thunderbirds with six goals on the season. A perfect 10-0 on the year, UBC heads to Prince George this weekend for a pair of games against UNBC.

Men's Soccer - Kevin Mailand (UFV Cascades)

Oct. 4 vs TRU: 1 goal, 1 shot on goal, 82 minutes played in 2-0 win
Oct. 6 vs UBCO: 2 goals, 1 assist, 2 shots on goal, 70 minutes played in 6-0 win
Kevin Mailand was electric on the wing for the UFV Cascades this weekend, notching four goal contributions in two big wins. His highlight reel play on the attack saw him score three goals, and added an assist in a dominant week of play for UFV.
In particular, Mailand's assist on Sunday was a sight to behold as he danced past defenders and looked sure to score his third goal of the night, but selflessly passed it across to a teammate for an easy tap-in.

Women's Hockey - Karine Sandilands (UBC Thunderbirds)

Oct. 4 at CGY: 2G, shootout winner, 4 shots, +2 in a 3-2 shootout win
Oct. 5 at CGY: 1 A, 1 shot, +2 in a 6-3 win
Karine Sandilands scored both of UBC's goals in regulation and followed up with the only goal of the shootout in Friday night's season opening 3-2 victory over the Dinos. The fourth-year forward earned the primary assist on Chanreet Bassi's game winner on Saturday as the T-Birds completed the weekend sweep to start the season 2-0.
The three-time defending Canada West Champion Thunderbirds host the Mount Royal Cougars for their home opening weekend starting Friday night at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.

Men's Hockey - Colson Gengenbach (Calgary Dinos)

Oct 4 at CGY: 1 G, 5 Shots
Oct 5 at CGY: 2G, 2A, 4PTS, 2 Shots, 1 GWG
Gengenbach helped the Dinos get off to a strong start, leading the Dinos to a pair of wins over UBC in a rematch of last year's CW final.
The fourth year forward from Edmonton had a goal and five shots in a 4-3 shootout win to open the season on Friday. He delivered a four point effort on Saturday, scoring twice and adding two assists in a convincing 5-2 victory.
