CW Announces BioSteel Players of the Week

Six student-athletes recognized across CW

Nov. 19, 2024 - It was another busy weekend around the conference, with six student-athletes to celebrate in this edition of the Canada West Players of the Week - Presented by BioSteel.


Women's Hockey - Grace Elliott (UBC Thunderbirds)

Nov. 15 at CGY: 1G, GWG, 1A, +1 in a 4-1 win

Nov. 16 at CGY: ​ 1G, 3 Shots, +1 in a 2-1 OT loss

The Canada West scoring leader had another hugely impactful weekend, scoring twice and finishing with three points as UBC picked up three out of four points on the road against the Dinos.

Elliott scored the game winner Friday night on the power play having already set-up Annalise Wong to open scoring earlier in the second period. The fourth-year forward scored her ninth of the season in the third period on Saturday, tying the game to force overtime. Elliott continues to lead the Canada West in goals (9) and assists (10) while her 19 points is good for a five point lead atop the conference.

Despite snapping their nine-game win streak, the T-Birds have points in ten straight games and will remain first in the conference coming out of their bye week.

Men's Hockey - Cole Schwebius (UBC Thunderbirds)

Nov. 15 vs CGY: 14 Saves, 1 GA, .933 save % in a 5-1 win

Nov. 16 vs CGY: Shutout, 19 saves in a 3-0 win

Coming off a spectacular week at Mount Royal, Cole Schwebius followed up with an even more dominant performance at home against the Dinos, allowing just one goal against on 34 combined shots, leading UBC to the weekend sweep.

Friday night saw Schwebius make 18 saves on 19 shots, the only puck to get past him coming on a second period Calgary power play. On Saturday, the third-year goaltender picked up his sixth win in as many starts and his fourth career Canada West shutout.

Schwebius heads into UBC's bye week tied for the Canada West wins lead along with a 1.99 GAA and a .922 save percentage on the season. Having won four straight and six of their last seven, the T-Birds remain just one point back of MRU for the West Division lead.

Women's Volleyball - Katreena Bentley (Manitoba Bisons)

Nov. 15 vs BDN: 9 aces (three set program record) 28 assists, five digs, one block

Nov. 16 vs BDN: 32 assists, ten digs, two kills, one ace

Fourth-year Bisons setter Katreena Bentley shattered the program record for aces in a three-set match (rally scoring era), racking up nine in a 3-0 win over Brandon on Friday. She had four in the first, three in the second and two in the third, following through with incredible velocity all game.

The 5'4" setter -- who shattered the Canada West record for assists last season with 983 -- added 28 on Friday and five digs.

The following night, Bentley put down 32 assists as Manitoba once again swept the Bobcats in straight sets. She has a Canada West-high 318 on the year, 27 more than anyone else in the conference.

Men's Volleyball - Jonas Van Huizen (UFV Cascades)

Nov. 15 vs TRU: 38 assists, 1 ace, 2 blocks, 5 digs, six kills, .417 hitting percentage

Nov. 16 vs TRU: 34 assists, 4 aces, 1 block, six digs, 5 kills, .400 hitting percentage

After playing the season so far as an outside hitter, Jonas Van Huizen transitioned back to the setter role this weekend for the UFV Cascades and led the team to their first two wins of the season over TRU.

Van Huizen racked up 72 assists while adding 5 aces and 11 digs. He also showed his attacking prowess, by knocking down 11 kills and hitting over .400 in the two matches.

Women's Basketball - Keira Daly (UBC Thunderbirds)

Nov. 15 vs VIC: 19 pts, 8/16 FG, 6 reb, 5 assists, 2 blocks, 4 steals in a 93-54 win

Nov. 16 vs VIC: 17 pts, 4 reb, 3 assists, 5 steals in a 68-53 win

Putting up game highs in points both Friday and Saturday night, Keira Daly led the Thunderbirds to the weekend sweep over the visiting Victoria Vikes at War Memorial Gym. Shooting 50 per cent from the field Friday with 19 points and a game-high five assist along with six rebounds, the rookie from Hamilton, Ont. followed up with another stellar effort Saturday. The Canada West rookie scoring leader, Daly sits tied for fourth in the conference with 102 points through just six games.

The T-Birds are the only undefeated team in the conference with a perfect 6-0 record and are set to host the 4-2 Calgary Dinos for a pair of contests this weekend in Vancouver.

Men's Basketball - Diego Maffia (Victoria Vikes)

Nov. 15 at UBC: 23 pts (team high), 8 rebounds (tie - team high), 5 assists (team-high), 1 block, 1 steal in a 93-80 win

Nov. 16 at UBC: 25 pts (team high), 4 rebounds, 3 assists (tie - team high), 2 steals in a 91-81 win

Diego Maffia led the top-ranked Vikes to a pair of road wins over No. 2-ranked UBC. Maffia tallied 48 points over the two games, and now sits just six points shy of tying the Vikes' all-time league scoring record of 1,657 points.

Maffia led the Vikes in points, assists, and rebounds in game one, and points and assists in game two to help the Vikes remain undefeated through six games.
