Conference announces weekly awards

Weekly award winners in Field Hockey, Rugby, and Wrestling unveiled

VANCOUVER - Victoria's Anna Mollenhauer, UBC's Emma Feldinger, Calgary's Gabby Cross and Alberta's Isaiah Springer were recognized by the Canada West for their performances over the past weekend.

Mollenhauer captained the Vikes to their third straight Canada West Field Hockey title, Feldinger helped the Thunderbirds finish the rugby season 5-0, while Cross and Springer had strong starts at the first wrestling event of the season.

At the final double round-robin field hockey tournament of the season, Mollenhauer scored twice against the Calgary Dinos on Friday and added a goal in a shootout with UBC, while helping the Vikes remain undefeated on the season en route to their 22nd conference banner in program history.

The fourth-year defender was also named Canada West Player of the Year at the conclusion of the conference's regular season in addition to being this week's Field Hockey Player of the Week and the conference's nominee for U SPORTS Athlete of the Week.

The Vikes will head to Ontario to take on the OUA Champion in a best-of-three series for the 2021 U SPORTS title November 11-14.


On the rugby pitch, UBC's Emma Feldinger earned Rugby Player of the Week honours after helping the Thunderbirds complete the regular season 5-0. The Alexis Creek, B.C. product's ability to move forward with and without the ball led to a try for the third-year in the Thunderbirds 44-10 win over Victoria on Saturday.

UBC heads to this week's Canada West Final Four in Calgary as the conference's top seed. The Thunderbirds will play the host Dinos on Thursday afternoon. The bronze and gold medal match are slated for Sunday. Both semifinals and medal matches will be available live on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.


Calgary Dinos wrestler Gabbie Cross is the Canada West Women's Wrestler of the Week after a strong showing at the dual meets during the Dinos Open.

Cross won both matches in the 59kg class, first defeating Alberta's Amy Bell by tech fall (12-1) before winning by fall against Saskatchewan's Olivia Campbell.

The next event on the conference calendar is the Huskie open, slated for November 25-27.

Alberta ​ wrestler Isaiah Springer is the conference's Men's Wrestler of the Week after the second-year Golden Bear put forward a strong showing at the opening event of the season in Calgary.

Springer won the Men's 72kg class in Sunday's dual meet, highlighted by a tech fall (10-0) win over Calgary's Aidan Smithanik. Springer would also finish first out of six competitors in the open portion of the 72kg competition.

The next event on the conference calendar is the Huskie open, slated for November 25-27.
