Canada West Unveils 2025 Men's Soccer All-Star and All-Rookie Teams

Oct. 24, 2025 – With the 2025 Canada West men’s soccer postseason set to kick off on Friday afternoon, the conference has announced its All-Star and All-Rookie selections.

1st Team All-Stars

There was a strong Pacific Division presence on the First Team, highlighted by trios from both the UBC Thunderbirds and Fraser Valley Cascades.

Fraser Valley was once again powered by reigning CW Player of the Year Mateo Brazinha, who led the conference with 13 goals in 13 matches. The dynamic forward was joined by defender Adam Szymanski and rookie goalkeeper Matheus De Souza, who earned the rare distinction of being named to both the All-Star and All-Rookie teams.

After rolling through the regular season unbeaten, the UBC Thunderbirds placed attackers Max Comsia and Luke Norman on the First Team. The duo tied for third in the conference scoring race with 11 points apiece, while Norman also co-led CW in assists with six. They were joined by defender Eric Lajeunesse, the anchor of a UBC backline that allowed just eight goals all season and recorded nine clean sheets — both conference bests.

The Calgary Dinos also landed a pair of First Team selections in Soliman Aria and Owen Antoniuk, who finished second in the CW scoring race with 10 goals and 14 points.

Rounding out the First Team were defenders Alex Kemsley (Mount Royal), Rodane Cato (Alberta), and Fin Tugwell (Victoria), each earning recognition for their steady all-around play.

2nd Team All-Stars

A pair of prolific goal scorers headline the Second Team All-Stars in Matthew Pearse (Victoria) and Chanan Chanda (Mount Royal). Pearse ranked third in CW goal scoring with eight tallies, while Chanda impressed in his debut season with seven goals—also earning him a spot on the All-Rookie Team.

Henri Godbout (UBC), Kevin Mailand (Fraser Valley), and Kai Sakaguchi (Lethbridge) rounded out the attacking selections, each contributing six goals to their respective teams.

Mount Royal added two more selections on the defensive side with JJ Walter and goalkeeper Sjard Strauss, both instrumental in the Cougars’ run to leading the Prairie Division. The defensive group was completed by Adam Hajdecki (Trinity Western), William Omoreniye (Calgary), and Patrick Kondraciuk (Alberta).

All-Rookie Team

The future of the conference looks bright, with a group of 11 first-year standouts honoured for making an immediate impact.

Both Matheus De Souza (Fraser Valley) and Chanan Chanda (Mount Royal) earned the impressive dual distinction of being named to an All-Star and All-Rookie team. Mount Royal led all programs with three rookie selections, as Joseph Green and Luka Patik joined Chanda on the list.

The UBC Thunderbirds also placed two on the team with Theo Afework and Nicolas Nadeau, while the Saskatchewan Huskies landed a pair of promising talents in Tao Hein and Dante Molina. Rounding out the group were Gabriel Moore (Trinity Western), Trystan Read (Alberta), and Jamie Wildash Chan (UNBC).

Playoff Matchups Set

The Canada West men’s soccer postseason begins this weekend with quarterfinal action on Friday, followed by the semifinals on Sunday.

Prairie Division champion Mount Royal will host one pod of games in Calgary, while Pacific Division champion UBC hosts the other in Vancouver.

In Calgary, the host Mount Royal Cougars take on the Trinity Western Spartans, while the Victoria Vikes battle the Lethbridge Pronghorns.

On the west coast, the Calgary Dinos and UFV Cascades engage in a rematch of last year's epic quarterfinal battle, while the defending champion UBC Thunderbirds put their undefeated record on the line against the scrappy Alberta Golden Bears.
