July 2, 2024 - While Canadians everywhere are soaking up the summer sunshine, it won't be long before Canada West hockey returns to the ice.

The conference has unveiled its 2024-25 hockey schedules, with the puck dropping on a new season in early October.

All nine member programs will play a 28 game schedule, with the journey towards lifting the prestigious Catherwood Cup and Dr. W.G. Hardy Trophy beginning with opening weekend Oct. 4 and 5. The 17-week regular season runs through Feb. 15, with playoffs beginning Feb. 21. The best-of-three Canada West Finals are scheduled to begin March 7.

This year's schedule will follow the format changes announced by the conference last October. Both men's and women's hockey will now feature two divisions consisting of four and five teams each, with the divisions rotating through nine teams over six years. Games will be played both in and out of division. This year will see TWU, UBC, Calgary and Mount Royal make up one division, while Alberta, MacEwan, Saskatchewan, Regina and Manitoba will comprise the other.

The top three teams in each division advance to the playoffs, with the top seed in each division receiving a first round bye. The best-of-three quarterfinal round will take place Feb. 21 to 23 and will see East #2 host West #3 and West #2 host East #3. Semifinals will follow Feb. 28 to March 2.

The 2025 U SPORTS national championships are headed east, with Waterloo hosting the women's event and Ottawa welcoming the men's championship. Both tournaments will run from March 20-23.

WHKY | UBC aims for four-peat

UBC claimed their third straight Catherwood Cup last season, defeating Alberta in the CW Finals to claim the first Canada West three-peat since Alberta's run of seven consecutive titles from 2002 to 2008.

The Pandas and T-Birds will meet twice in 2024-25, with games set for Oct. 25 and 26 in Edmonton.

The new calendar is filled with regional rivalries, including MacEwan/Alberta and Saskatchewan/Regina clashing on opening weekend. West coast rivals Trinity Western and UBC first renew acquaintances Oct. 18 and 19, with Calgary and Mount Royal also meeting head to head for the first time that weekend.

Looking to get their season off to a strong start, Manitoba opens at home against the Pandas on Oct. 12 and 13.

With four different champions over the past four seasons, parity has reigned supreme as of late in Canada West men's hockey.

Last season, it was the UBC Thunderbirds who made program history by hoisting the Dr. W.G. Hardy Trophy for the first time in 53 years, defeating Calgary in a tight final series that went the distance.

The T-Birds will play the Dinos six times in 2024-25, with UBC hosting games on Oct. 4/5 and Nov. 15/16 while the Dinos play host on Feb. 14 and 15.

Speaking of the Dinos, fans in Calgary won't have to wait long for the Crowchild Classic rivalry to return. Bitter rivals Mount Royal and Calgary will first face off on Oct. 18 and 19, with additional matchups on Jan. 3/4 and Jan. 31/Feb. 1.

Up the road in Edmonton, cross-city rivals Alberta and MacEwan will open the season with a home-and-home Oct. 4 and 5, with additional clashes on Nov. 8/9 and Jan. 3/4.

Provincial rivals Saskatchewan and Regina will also meet four times this season, with games scheduled for Oct. 4 and 5 as well as Jan. 10 and 11.
